In an official step towards becomingsustainable transportation, the UAE announced the issuance of a license to operate an electric cargo plane, and this is part of the efforts made to provide environmentally friendly transportation.

The UAE Regulations Laboratory – affiliated with the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers – issued the new temporary license in cooperation with the American multinational company United Parcel Service (UPS), which specializes in shipping, receiving and supply chain management.

This permit will enable the company to conduct testing of vertical take-off and landing operations in the United Arab Emirates. It is expected that this step will help reduce the carbon footprint by encouraging the adoption of clean energy, as well as benefiting from the potential of technological innovation in resetting the future of the logistics services sector.

Issuing such a license for electric aircraft is part of RegLab’s “national mission”; In an effort to harmonize regulations with the latest innovations, such as: 3D printing technologies, artificial intelligence, and other innovations.

This temporary license for electric aircraft comes after the approval of the UAE, as it has become a final official license in the entire region since September 2022. The new sustainable aircraft license activates a recognized legal framework for operating an advanced generation of cargo aircraft operating with clean energy, which enhances the UAE’s efforts. To implement environmentally friendly programs and initiatives aimed at supporting the economy.

Also, Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), stressed the importance of the “RegLab” license, because it provides the legal text temporarily to push the United Arab Emirates to net zero emissions by 2050.

Al Marri also spoke about the UAE’s keenness to adopt the best advanced technologies and international practices in the air freight industry. He pointed out that the UAE seeks to increase investments in the environmentally friendly air transport sector, to support its contributions to the UAE’s gross domestic product.

In the same context, Maryam Al Hammadi, Minister of State and Secretary-General of the UAE Cabinet, said: “The UAE has succeeded in making great strides in the field ofsustainabilityand combating climate change.” She confirmed that the UAE is leading global efforts to combat climate change and achieve sustainability, which contributes to shaping a better future for humanity.

Al-Hammadi pointed to the work of the “Regulations Laboratory” with a number of experts, legislators, and entrepreneurs in federal and local government agencies and the private sector. The laboratory’s mission is to develop new legislation that helps design and adopt a flexible legislative system that can keep pace with sustainability requirements and can harmonize the speed of regulations with the speed of innovation.
