The development of health care.. The success of the first surgery to implant a deep brain stimulation device in Ismailia

The healthcare system in Egypt is witnessing an unprecedented qualitative boom in recent years, as it witnesses several rapid developments in the medical infrastructure, the localization of advanced therapeutic technologies, and the expansion of subspecialties within health facilities. This comes within the framework of the state’s vision to improve the quality of health care provided to citizens, and to ensure the availability of the latest diagnostic and treatment methods in accordance with international standards, especially within the comprehensive health insurance system.

In this context, the successive successes of the Healthcare Authority provide a clear indication of this development, through carrying out precise medical and surgical interventions that were previously limited to major specialized centers. These achievements reflect the remarkable progress in the level of medical personnel, the efficiency of health facilities, and the system’s ability to provide advanced treatment services that contribute to achieving good health for citizens within the various regions of the Republic, thus contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to achieving good health and well-being (Goal 3).

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Device

In continuation of the busy progress, the General Health Care Authority announced the success of the medical team at the Ismailia Medical Complex in performing the implantation of a deep brain stimulation (DBS) device for a patient suffering from genetic dystonia since childhood (Heritable dystonia) – which is a motor neurological disorder resulting from genetic mutations that cause repetitive, involuntary muscle contractions and twisting of parts of the body (such as The neck, limbs, or face) hinders movement and walking – for the first time in the Canal region, after failure to respond to traditional drug treatment.

This intervention is considered one of the most delicate and advanced surgeries in the field of functional neurosurgery, as it relies on implanting fine electrodes within specific areas of the brain to control abnormal nerve signals, which contributes to reducing disease symptoms and significantly improving the ability to move daily and the quality of life of patients.

Rapid development in the level of brain surgery

In this context, Dr. Ahmed Al-Sabki, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority for Health Care, stated: “The success of this operation reflects the great commitment on the part of the Authority to localize advanced medical technologies and raise the level of subspecialties within its facilities, allowing them to benefit from the latest therapeutic interventions without the need to travel outside their governorates.”

Al-Sabki also confirmed that this operation represents a new achievement that reflects the rapid development in the level of neurosurgery services within the Authority’s facilities, and strengthens the position of the Ismailia Medical Complex to be an advanced reference center at the level of the Canal Region, after a similar operation was previously conducted in the Authority’s hospitals in Luxor Governorate.

The best levels of health care

Al-Subki added that the Authority continues to develop subspecialties within health facilities to provide the best level of therapeutic care, and to ensure that patients have access to the latest diagnostic and treatment methods within the comprehensive health insurance system.”

There is no doubt that this continuous development contributes significantly to achieving the third goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): good health and well-being, and enhancing equal opportunities in obtaining advanced medical care across the various governorates.

An integrated medical team at the highest level

The medical team performing the surgery included: Dr. Ziad Yousry, consultant in functional brain surgery at the Authority’s hospitals and professor of neurosurgery at the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, and Dr. Mohamed Al-Sanafiri, assistant executive director of the Health Care Authority for development and evaluation of clinical services and lecturer of neurosurgery at the Faculty of Medicine, Menoufia University. This came under the supervision and supervision of Dr. Hossam Salama, medical director at the Ismailia Medical Complex, and Dr. Ahmed Khaled, Director of the Medical Complex.

The Authority concluded its statement by affirming the continued support and development of health care services in various parts of the Republic, especially subspecialties, in a way that ensures the availability of the latest therapeutic interventions for patients within the comprehensive health insurance system, and enhances the position of the Authority’s facilities in functional neurosurgery.
