UNESCO…an Egyptian-led culture and peace organization in a historic event

In a world witnessing fluctuations and crises in various fields, UNESCO paints a global picture that makes education, culture and identity a necessary investment to improve the lives of current and future generations. Especially since the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – known by the abbreviationUNESCO– is one of the most influential United Nations institutions in shaping human awareness and building peace among the peoples of the world.

From this standpoint,Earth Defenders Foundation seeks to shed light on the pivotal role played byUNESCO in shaping global awareness towards issues of education, culture and sustainable development, while highlighting the historical event that will constitute a turning point in the organization’s journey, represented by the election of Dr. Khaled. Al-Anani was appointed Director-General of UNESCO, being the first Egyptian and Arab to hold this high position.

UNESCO’s global role

Since its founding in 1945 – after World War II – UNESCO has adopted an immortal principle that says: “Since wars begin in the minds of people, in their minds the fortresses of peace must be built”; To make education and culture a path towards a more stable and humane future.

Hence, UNESCO works to strengthen international cooperation in the fields ofEducation, science, culture and communication, through its contribution to the formulation of global educational and cultural policies, and the development of curricula. It also implements pioneering programmes, such as theMan and Biosphere Program, which promotes the balance between humans and the environment.

In the cultural field, the organization plays the role of the guardian of humanity’s tangible and intangible heritage, supervises lists of World Heritage sites, and helps countries preserve their cultural heritage, from ancient temples to folk arts. It also works to enhance freedom of expression and independent media within a system of global justice and transparency.

Egypt and UNESCO are a partnership extending throughout history

Sinceits accession to UNESCO in 1946, Egypt has woven one of the deepest partnerships in the organization’s history, as the campaign to save Nubian temples during the 1960s represented a pivotal moment that brought together the efforts of Egypt and the world – in cooperation with UNESCO – in an epic that has become a symbol of international cooperation in protecting human heritage.

Since then, Egypt has continued its effective presence by registering seven sites on the World Heritage List, supporting African education programs, establishingUNESCO chairs in its universities, and participating in projects to preserve tangible and intangible heritage, such as Historic Cairo and Wadi El Hitan.

As this cooperation continues through the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo, Egypt remains a pivotal partner in formulating UNESCO policies that link culture, education, and sustainable development in the Arab world and Africa.

Khaled Al-Anani for a new stage

Today – after decades of positive interaction between Egypt and UNESCO – the first Egyptian and Arab in the organization’s history is elected to assume the position of Director General, in a historical precedent that confirms Egypt’s pioneering role in the world.

The Executive Board of UNESCO elected Dr.Khaled Al-Anani as the organization’s new Director-General, after obtaining an overwhelming majority, joining a rich career that included his work as Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in Egypt, as well as his international contributions in supporting Egyptian cultural diplomacy.

Where is the road

The program of Dr. Khaled Al-Anani, the new Director-General of UNESCO, is based on three strategic axes that embody his vision under the slogan “UNESCO for People.” In the introduction are:

Education

Education is the core of the organization’s work and the focus of development and peace globally. Hence, Al-Anani seeks to develop digital education, expand lifelong learning opportunities, and modernize curricula in line with the values of global citizenship and human rights.

Culture

The second axis is protecting heritage and culture, based on his long experience in the field of antiquities. It aims to preserve cultural and natural heritage using modern technologies, combat illicit trafficking in cultural property, and promote cultural and creative industries to advance sustainable development efforts.

Administration

This vision is complemented by a third axis, which is reforming the administrative and financing structure within UNESCO. In order to ensure its efficiency and financial independence, by reducing bureaucracy, diversifying funding sources, and establishing an emergency fund that guarantees UNESCO’s readiness to confront global crises and disasters.

So, the victory of Dr. Khaled Al-Anani to the position of Director-General of UNESCO does not only express an Egyptian diplomatic success, but also a qualitative shift in the course ofUNESCO itself, which today is entering a new era of openness and balance between the countries of the North and the countries of the South.

With the leadership of an Egyptian Arab expert, the organization will possess a deep cultural awareness in preserving human heritage, based on its assigned role, which is to be a beacon of cultural enlightenment and international understanding.

From the perspective ofThe Earth Guards Foundation, this stage represents a rare opportunity to redirect global efforts towards humans, as the focus of sustainable development and the goal of all education, culture and science policies.
