Egypt strengthens its position in the electricity generation sector from renewable energy regionally and internationally
As Egypt enters a new phase of leadership inRenewable energy, its vision is clear to be a regional power capable of leading the transition towards sustainable development. The country seeks to strengthen its position in the region as a center for producing and exporting clean energy to support the region’s economy and achieve environmental sustainability.
These ambitious efforts reflect Egypt’s commitment to transforming its natural resources into engines for economic growth, and making clean energy an essential part of the development path, ensuring the well-being of current and future generations and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the economic, social and environmental levels.
Egypt leads the regional renewable energy scene
In this context, the “Abydos 2” solar energy project achieved a notable achievement by winning the Deal of the Year Award in Africa 2025, within the PFI International Awards, which reflects Egypt’s superiority in the field of renewable energy. This achievement comes in the context of the country’s strategy aimed at promoting renewable energy as a fundamental pillar of sustainable development, through diversifying energy sources, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and expanding major projects in solar and wind energy.

Giant projects that support the boom in renewable energy
The last ten years have witnessed an unprecedented boom in Egypt’s capabilities to generate electricity from renewable energy, reaching about 9,366 megawatts in 2025. This boom included a group of giant projects, the most prominent of which are:
- Benban Solar Energy Complex, with a total capacity of 1465 MW.
- Jabal El-Zeit Wind Farm with a capacity of 580 MW.
- Abydos 1 and 2 solar power stations with capacities of 500 MW each.
- The Obelisk solar energy project, which combines electricity generation and storage, is a pioneering model in Egypt.
- Aqua Power solar station with a capacity of 200 MW.
These projects reflect the state’s focus on building a strong and sustainable infrastructure in the energy sector, which supports ambitious plans to transition to clean energy.
Electrical interconnection and regional cooperation
Egypt’s efforts in renewable energy also include electrical interconnection projects with neighboring countries to exchange and export electricity from renewable energy. These initiatives include:
- Linking with Greece and Italy to export a large portion of clean renewable energy to Europe.
- Linking with Saudi Arabia to exchange energy between the two countries through multiple stages.
- Transferring energy to Libya, Sudan and Jordan to support the energy mix and enhance regional cooperation.
These efforts confirm Egypt’s role as a regional platform for clean energy, and also highlight its strategy in supporting sustainable development by enhancing regional cooperation.
Egypt’s ranking among Arab countries in renewable energy
In the same context, Egypt leads the Arab countries in renewable energy according to the International Renewable Energy Agency, followed by a group of countries that are making varying strides in this field, including:
- UAE
- Saudi Arabia
- Morocco
- Jordan
- Sudan
- Iraq
This ranking reflects Egypt’s leadership in investing in clean energy, and the qualitative leaps it has achieved in generation capabilities over the past decade.
Renewable energy and a sustainable future
These achievements confirm that Egypt places environmental and social sustainability at the heart of its plans. Expanding renewable energy contributes to reducing carbon emissions and supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the most important of which are: (Goal 7) clean and affordable energy, (Goal 9) industry, innovation and infrastructure, (Goal 13) combating climate change.
These projects also reflect the state’s ability to combine modern technology with long-term investment, to provide clean energy for current and future generations.

Based on the above, Egypt confirms its position as one of the most prominent actors in the renewable energy scene regionally and internationally, due to its success in combining the expansion of generation capabilities, the adoption of modern technologies, and the strengthening of electrical connectivity with neighboring countries. This integration between local production and regional cooperation reflects a comprehensive vision that deals with energy as a tool for development, an engine for economic growth, and a bridge for integration between countries.
For its part,The Earth Guards Foundation appreciates Egypt’s efforts to implement major projects and strengthen international partnerships, towards consolidating a development model based on clean energy and sustainability in accordance with the comprehensive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): (Goal 7) clean and affordable energy, (Goal 9) industry, innovation and infrastructure, (Goal 13) Combating climate change.
