World Wildlife Day calls for the preservation of life on land

World DayBiology DayWildness Day calls for the preservation of life on land

Wildlife is an essential element in the stability of ecosystems, on which humans depend in their daily lives. They contribute to purifying the air, providing fresh water, maintaining soil fertility, as well as providing us with the natural resources necessary to sustain life. However, environmental changes and human interventions are significantly disrupting these delicate balances.

Based on this reality, World Wildlife Day comes to emphasize the importance of protecting life on land. In order to preservebiodiversity, as a pillar of sustainable development thatEarth Guards seeks to strengthen by supporting global environmental efforts, and raising awareness of the necessity of preserving the living organisms that share this planet with us; Therefore,Earth Guards, in this article, highlights this day, which reflects a global awareness of the value of biodiversity and its vital role in sustaining life on land. So keep reading.

What is World Wildlife Day?

The world annually celebrates World Wildlife Day on March 3, an occasion that aims to raise awareness of the importance of biological diversity and the protection of living organisms. The United Nations designated this day in 2013 as an opportunity to highlight efforts made to preserve wildlife, and it coincides with the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973.

The importance of wildlife in human life

Wildlife plays an essential role in human life. Millions of people in the world depend on natural resources to obtain food, medicine, and sources of income.  This makes preserving these resources a major contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the two goals (1) eradicating poverty and (2) eliminating hunger. Ecosystems such as forests and oceans embrace enormous biological diversity. For example, forests are home to approximately 80% of the world’s amphibians and 75% of the birds, and more than 1.6 billion people depend on them for their livelihoods. Which makes preserving them – and other natural habitats – an environmental and economic necessity at the same time.

Challenges facing wildlife

These systems face increasing threats from accelerating human activities, such as deforestation, climate change, and unsustainable urbanization; Which leads to the loss of natural habitats and the decline in the numbers of many organisms. Reports indicate that there are more than one million species threatened with extinction as a result of climate change and unjust human interventions.

This decline in biodiversity not only affects the stability of ecosystems, but also affects the quality of human life. Environmental balance is closely linked to the availability and sustainability of natural resources. The global economy also depends heavily on nature, as estimates indicate that more than half of the global gross domestic product depends on it, whether directly or indirectly. Which makes protecting these systems a global necessity.

Environmental Finance Crisis

Despite international efforts to protect biodiversity, there is still a large financing gap, as annual needs for wildlife protection are estimated at about $824 billion, while current funding does not exceed $143 billion, and this gap represents a major obstacle to implementing environmental protection plans.

In light of the large financing gap to protect biodiversity, the search for sustainable solutions has become necessary, which is in line with Goal (15) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Life on Land, which focuses on restoring degraded ecosystems and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.

Innovative financing solutions have emerged that seek to transform national debts into funds to protect nature. Among these mechanisms are debt swaps for the establishment of environmental projects, and the launch of green bonds to finance wildlife protection projects. These tools provide new financial resources that support biodiversity conservation efforts and reduce environmental risks that threaten wildlife.

Global Partnership to Save Biodiversity

Therefore, the celebration of World Wildlife Day this year – in 2025 – will be exceptional, as this event is scheduled to witness the participation of many international organizations, such as the CITES Convention, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the WILDLABS Initiative, the Jackson Wild Foundation, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), through interactive events that highlight innovative financial solutions to protect biodiversity. This high-level celebration will be held at the Palais des Nations. United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland on Monday, March 3, 2025, and will be broadcast live on the World Wildlife Day YouTube channel, ensuring that the event reaches audiences on a global scale.

In conclusion, international efforts are a model for global cooperation, in line with Goal (10) Life on Land, and Goal (17) Establishing Partnerships to Achieve Goals.Earth Guards believes that interest in protecting wildlife should not be limited to this day only, but rather it should be a sustainable commitment that reflects global awareness of the importance of biological diversity. Every step towards protecting the environment is an investment in a more sustainable future.
