The launch of a 100 MW green hydrogen project in the Suez Canal Economic Zone

The world is witnessing an accelerating shift towards clean and sustainable energy, with a focus on developing environmentally friendly energy sources such as solar, wind, andGreen hydrogen. Green Hydrogen Production Project

In this context, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, held a meeting at the government headquarters in the new capital, to follow up on the implementation of the green hydrogen production project with a capacity of 100 megawatts in the industrial zone of Ain Sokhna, affiliated with the Suez Canal Economic Zone, which is being implemented through a specialized Norwegian company in cooperation with the “Sovereign Fund of Egypt” and a group of Egyptian companies.

The meeting was attended by Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, Engineer Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mr. Walid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone, Mr. Erik Husem, Ambassador of Norway to Egypt, and Mrs. Angelina Eichhorst, Ambassador of the European Union to Egypt, And officials of a number of European banks.

The Prime Minister began the meeting by praising the Egyptian-Norwegian partnerships that have achieved remarkable success and progress over the past period in renewable energy projects in the Egyptian market in line with the Egyptian state’s goals to increase the proportion of the renewable energy component of the total energy mix.

A major launch for the green hydrogen project

Dr. Mostafa Madbouly stressed the Egyptian government’s commitment to supporting the hydrogen production project, which is being implemented through a specialized Norwegian company in cooperation with the “Sovereign Fund of Egypt” and a group of Egyptian companies in the industrial zone in Ain Sokhna.

He indicated that the project has partially begun production, and during the coming period we will witness a major launch for this project, which will contribute significantly to the export of green hydrogen to the European continent as well as a number of other international markets.

In this context, the Prime Minister praised Egyptian-European cooperation, which is witnessing real momentum at various levels, noting that with regard to supporting renewable energy projects, the European Union and European financing institutions express a sincere desire to support renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in the Egyptian market, and explaining that the green hydrogen production project being discussed is one of the important projects that receives broad European support.

Full support for project completion

For his part, Engineer Mahmoud Esmat confirmed that the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has supported this project since its inception by providing the necessary energy sources for it as well as by providing suitable lands for the project, stressing his full support for completing the rest of the project during the coming period.

The Minister also reviewed the national energy strategy, the available investment projects and opportunities, support for the local and foreign private sector to participate, and the work program of the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to maximize the role of new and renewable energies in the energy mix and reliance on it, green hydrogen, and the state’s vision for managing and investing in natural resources to enhance sustainability and energy security.

Green Hydrogen and Energy Security

In turn, the Norwegian Ambassador, Mr. Erik Husem, expressed his appreciation for the Egyptian-Norwegian partnership in clean energy transition programs, praising the great alliance with Egypt in the field of energy security and green hydrogen production.

While the European Union Ambassador to Egypt, Ms. Angelina Eichhorst, confirmed that Cairo is one of the first players in the green hydrogen market in the world, praising the Egyptian-European cooperation in the field of renewable energy, especially in terms of cooperation with European financing institutions for renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in the Egyptian market.

Exporting green hydrogen to global markets

During the meeting, the coalition partners implementing the green hydrogen project in the Sokhna Industrial Zone affiliated with the Suez Canal Economic Authority confirmed that this project represents a high priority for them, especially since the project has already begun exporting to a number of global markets, including European and American markets.

While European bank officials who attended the meeting expressed their aspiration to finance this important project, stressing their support for the Egyptian state to be a center for green hydrogen and green ammonia, saying: We have a real desire to support Egypt in this field not only through this project but also through other projects in this sector.

Based on the above, the green hydrogen production project in the Suez Canal Economic Zone represents a practical model for the transition towards clean energy in Egypt, as it combines industrial innovation, international partnerships, and careful strategic planning. The project will support energy security, export to European and international markets, and stimulate investment in the renewable energy sector.
