Dr. Liam Fox, a member of the British Parliament, and Graham Stewart, the British Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Emissions, participated in a session entitled: Global Prospects for Achieving Net Zero Emissions while Addressing Greenwashing, where “the United Nations Special Envoy for Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the climate pioneer for the Egyptian Presidency of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change COP27,” Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, said: “The Race to Net Zero Emissions campaign strongly supports climate action, and the integration between it and the Race to Resilience campaign in the face of climate change helps achieve the goals of theParis Climate Agreement.”
This discussion session was part of the activities of the “Innovation Zero” conference and exhibition held in the British capital, London, in which Mohieldin explained the momentum that the Race to Net Zero Emissions campaign has gained since its launch three years ago until now, as it has included 11,000 members in about 130 countries, pointing out the role that this campaign had in leading the transition to reducing emissions on The level of many cities, institutions and companies, explaining how the campaign established the standards and controls that govern the process of a just transition towards reducing harmful emissions to the zero level.
Regarding these standards and controls, Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin added, saying: “This campaign has established rules for implementation that guarantee a fair reduction of emissions.” Then he explained how the programs of the Climate Leaders Group and the Marrakesh Partnership for the current year focused on the actors’ attention to their responsibilities towards climate action, and this was done by implementing the recommendations of the High-Level Experts Report on Integrity, which is a report issued by the independent group of experts that was formed under the guidance of Secretary-General António Guterres. With the aim of developing standardsEnvironmental Action Governance, as standards capable of confronting the phenomenon of greenwashing.
In the same context, Mohieldin stressed that climate action has engines that include financing mobilization, technological treatment, and behavioral change, which are engines that help climate pioneers – in partnership with active parties – to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. Therefore, Dr. Mohieldin stressed the importance of these parties and encouraged them to move forward towards work related to adaptation to climate change, and also to preserve biodiversity, in addition to the commitment of the concerned parties to implement pledges to reduce emissions.
Regarding the role of the Climate Pioneers Team, the United Nations Special Envoy for Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Climate Pioneer for the Egyptian Presidency of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Climate Change Convention (COP27), indicated that the Team is working to support women and their role, and to motivate young people to lead future dialogue in the field of climate action; To innovate solutions to the climate crisis.
At the conclusion of his speech, Dr. Mohieldin stressed the extent of the current focus on mobilizing the necessary funds to implement the Sharm El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda, as well as implementing the projects proposed in the “Five Regional Forums for Climate Projects Initiative”; He also stressed that the establishment of carbon markets in developing countries is encouraged along the lines of the “African Carbon Markets Initiative,” in addition to activating debt reduction tools and exchanging them for climate investment.
