Egyptian participation in the United Nations Water Conference
The activities of the “United Nations Conference for the Comprehensive Midterm Review of the Decade of Water,” known as “United Nations Water Conference,” will begin in New York City today, Wednesday, coinciding with the global celebration of “International Day.” For water”, which is celebrated on the 22nd of March every year.
Previously, “United Nations General Assembly” considered the period between (2018 – 2028) an “International Water Decade”, and this was in its resolution No. (222/71), so that the year 2023 falls in the middle of this decade, as this year was chosen to review what has been achieved across the world in terms of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the field of Water.
Hence, Egypt participates with a high-level delegation in the activities of the United Nations Water Conference. This delegation is headed by Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, who stated that Egypt’s participation in such an international conference seeks to mobilize the efforts of the international community in supporting water issues.
On the sidelines of the Egyptian participation in the conference activities, Dr. Hani Sweilem met with the ministers of irrigation in the countries of Tajikistan and Namibia, in addition to a number of United Nations officials. In it, he discussed the global challenges facing water, and the extent of the negative impacts of climate change on the water sector, especially in Africa. Drawing attention to the Egyptian efforts made to confront these challenges locally and in Africa, through Egypt’s presidency of the Council of African Ministers of Water (AMCAW).
Suwailem pointed to the importance of mobilizing international efforts, in order to support water issues, as well as providing the necessary funds to confront all the challenges facing developing countries, especially those facing the African continent. For all of this, the celebration of World Water Day spread the slogan “Accelerating the pace of change to solve the sanitation and water crises.”
