Egypt’s water efforts within the work of the Development Working Group

Despite the efforts and broad steps taken by the world towards addressing water issues, it still needs more efforts and many investments that can return the water sector - and all sectors - to its sustainable path.

Based on the above, the Development Working Group - DWG, which is affiliated with the G20, was held between July 22 and 23, where the participating parties discussed in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the necessity of concerted civil society efforts to address water problems. The Brazilian presidency of the G20 also called for strengthening all water sector services locally, regionally, and globally, and accelerating measures that would achieve the sixth goal. Among the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): clean water and sanitation.

The G20 is considered a forum for international economic cooperation, and its members are: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States.

The role of the G20 is limited to coordinating between global administrations concerned with all major international economic issues. As for the Development Working Group, it coordinates the G20’s policies in the field of development, helps accelerate the pace of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and ensures their precise achievement. So that no one is left behind in development.

There, development ministers - including Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, “Minister of Planning and International Cooperation” - discussed ways to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and methods to enhance development efforts in developing countries. In order for the world to ensure a sustainable and equitable future for all. Discussions also revolved around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit that came last September. To confirm this commitment, especially after the increase in global problems that hinder development efforts and strategies, such as climate change problems, environmental degradation, and loss of biodiversity.

Regarding these problems, the group reviewed a number of international initiatives supporting climate change adaptation projects in the water sector, such as the “AWARe” initiative launched by Egypt duringCOP27 in 2023; To address the challenges of the water and climate sector at the global level.

The water projects implemented by Egypt were also discussed, emphasizing the importance of facilitating the financing of these projects by international partners. Among these projects that the group highlighted: a project to strengthen national capabilities to face water security challenges, a project to establish a water system for the Bahr al-Baqar drain, as well as water desalination projects, and water and sanitation services projects in various Egyptian governorates.

These Egyptian efforts had a positive presence within the sessions of the Development Working Group; Because they are actual steps towards enhancing growth in all sectors, and promoting the green transformation, especially since Egypt adopts a balanced economic discourse, is more aware of global, regional and local challenges, and is more open to international investors. This is in favor of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In addition to the above, the attention of the G20 and its sub-group - the Development Working Group - was focused within the framework of the sixth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and it also included - the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that intersect with water issues, including this first goal: eradicating poverty, as well as the third goal: good health and well-being, in addition to the tenth goal: reducing inequalities.
