Egypt and the European Union enhance cooperation in the field of clean energy and sustainable development
Egyptian-European relations have recently witnessed a strong push towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the holding of the ninth meeting of the Subcommittee on Transport, Environment and Energy between Egypt and the European Union, a meeting that demonstrates the importance of international partnership in building a more sustainable future.
This meeting was chaired by Dr. Rania Al-Mashat – Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation – in which representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Affairs of Egyptians Abroad, Electricity and Renewable Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Water Resources and Irrigation, Environment, Transport, Civil Aviation, Industry, and the General Authority of the Suez Canal participated.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the European Commission and the European Union in Egypt, in addition to representatives of the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the French Development Agency. There was a prominent presence of representatives of several European countries such as Spain, Germany, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Latvia, and the Netherlands.
Dr. Rania Al-Mashat indicated in her opening speech the importance of convening the committee to enhance economic cooperation with the European side within the framework of the strategic partnership, explaining that the main files that the partnership focuses on are food security, water security, green hydrogen, and cooperation in the fields of transportation, petroleum, and the environment. She stated that significant progress has been achieved in that partnership towards achievingsustainable development, since the eighth meeting was held in Brussels in March 2023.
The Minister added that Egyptian-European relations are witnessing continuous and positive development, as a result of mutual keenness to strengthen investment, trade and economic relations, and this has been embodied in the Ministry’s continuous work in coordination with national authorities to advance these relations within the framework of the strategic partnership between the two sides, through the announced package worth 7.4 billion euros, in addition to the partnership with European countries and European financing institutions.
During the meeting, a comprehensive review was made of the achievements achieved since the eighth meeting of the Subcommittee on Transport, Environment and Energy, which was held in March 2023, as the meeting shed light on the main developments and projects that have been implemented since then in the fields of transport, environment and energy, while mentioning the lessons learned to enhance efficiency and achieve common goals more effectively.
The agenda of the committee meeting included strategic axes aimed at deepening cooperation between the parties concerned and enhancing integration in these vital sectors, most notably energy; The developments and efforts undertaken by the state to expand the production of clean energyand the implementation of the national strategy for sustainable energy were discussed, in addition to cooperation in the field of climate issues.
The meeting also reviewed the most prominent developments and policies implemented by the state to achieve the National Climate Change Strategy 2050. In addition, the meeting discussed cooperation in the field of environmental and irrigation issues, and presented recent developments to develop the infrastructure of the transport and port sector, modernize public transport networks, and cooperation in the field of maritime transport.
On the other hand, the European side gave a presentation on its new policies in the field of energy, the developments in the European Green Agreement and the legislative policies supporting it, and the environmental initiatives that it is working to implement within the framework of this bilateral regional cooperation. Which demonstrated the European side’s keenness to enhance cooperation with Egypt in these vital areas.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides stressed the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union in the vital sectors discussed, which paves the way for achieving sustainable development and determining priorities for the next stage. Through this partnership, the two sides can achieve tangible progress in achieving this development through cooperation in implementing joint projects and exchanging experiences.
It is worth noting that investing in clean energy will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and creating new job opportunities in the renewable energy sector. In addition, enhancing efficiency in the use of resources contributes to preserving natural resources, reducing costs, and improving the competitiveness of the economy. This helps build more resilient societies in the face of climate change, reduces risks resulting from natural disasters, and protects sensitive infrastructure and ecosystems.
