Egyptian steps towards a sustainable homeland

Professor Dr. Eng. Khaled Sufi:
- Alternative fuels have a special specification.
- Children have a share of the body’s specifications.
- Painting companies are an example of compliance with specifications.
It is no secret to anyone the role of theEgyptian AuthorityGeneral Authority for Standardization and Quality; It is the official Egyptian authority authorized to issue standard specifications related to products consumed by all Egyptian citizens. Not only that, but the Authority has many activities in the field of setting industrial standards, in addition to representing the country before international and regional organizations in the areas of: specifications, quality, calibrations, and tests.
For this great importance, Homat Al-Ard magazine met with Dr. Khaled Sofi, “President of the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality.” In order to shed light on the vital role of the Authority, and its initiatives that seek to protect the consumer and preserve the environment, in light of Egypt’s Vision 2030… so on to the lines of dialogue.
At the beginning of his talk, Dr. Khaled Sofi stressed the necessity of using health-safe products, which follow the concept of energy conservation, and take into account environmental performance indicators, as he saw that products that do not carry such instructions are extremely harmful to the consumer, health-wise and financially.
In the same context, the head of the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality noted the importance of the consumer being aware of the danger of products that are not subject to specifications and quality, given that consumers’ awareness of this danger is an aid to controlling the process of following quality standards and safety instructions.
Regarding the companies that follow this sustainable approach, Sofi mentioned paint companies, as an example of commitment to the specifications of the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality. He pointed out that these companies place the QR Code – in addition to the authority’s green label – on their products. This is a sign that the product conforms to quality specifications and protects humans and their environment.
Then, Dr. Khaled Sofi highlighted the specifications issued by the Authority, and how they are compatible with the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Regarding the alternative fuel specification – for example – he talked about cement factories, stressing that the problem with this type of factory lies in the extent of their ability to use alternative fuels. Cement is an energy-intensive industry. Here, the head of the authority pointed out that the kilns of cement factories are constantly burning. Which increases its need for fuel.
Here, the head of the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality directed attention to the role of treating and recycling garbage in supporting the cement industry, away from consuming traditional energy with a negative environmental impact. Therefore, he hinted that this large percentage of waste could be a less expensive, more pollution-free energy resource. Sophie drew attention to the fact that some countries – such as China – import waste from Egypt. For use in its factory furnaces.
Then he talked about the clothing and textiles standard, explaining that it is an important standard, especially since the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality has stipulated that textile manufacturing materials be free of any carcinogens.
Regarding the specifications related to children, Sophie went on to say: This type of specifications has a positive overlap with other types of specifications. In detail, the head of the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality mentioned a number of specifications related to the child and his life, such as child care tools, including portable infant beds, as well as supports, and what is related to diapers, children’s toys, as well as office tools, which are indispensable for every child in school.
Moreover, Dr. Khaled Sofi quickly pointed out some specifications that are related to many important areas, including: water rationalization, alternative energy, and other fields; This is through the Authority’s departments and sectors, such as the Engineering Specifications Sector, the Food Specifications Sector, and the Chemical Specifications Sector.
Dr. Khaled Sofi concluded his talk to Earth Guards Magazine by expressing clear interest in the feasibility of cooperation between the magazine and the Authority, suggesting that cooperation be through information exchange, and publishing what is related to specifications and quality news on the platforms of both the Authority and the magazine; So that all of this is a step towards enhancing consumer awareness among citizens.
For this meeting, Homat Al-Ard magazine thanks the Chairman of the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality – Dr. Khaled Sofi – wanting the future to yield sustainable green cooperation. In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030.
