Egypt participates in OECD meetings to support economic development
The global economy is going through a series of rapid transformations, which forces it to face challenges related to maintaining economic growth rates, enhancing financial stability, and achieving economic development. Therefore, the importance of international platforms concerned with formulating economic policies and exchanging experiences between countries is increasing. The meetings of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) come at the forefront of these forums, as they are an international space that brings together decision-makers to discuss the economic issues that most affect the future of markets, investments, and sustainable development.
Egypt is keen to actively participate in international economic meetings and forums that discuss priority development and economic issues at the regional and global levels, based on its belief in the importance of dialogue and exchange of experiences in supporting industrial development efforts and formulating policies more capable of responding to changing challenges. These participations also represent an opportunity to enhance cooperation with international institutions and development partners, review national experiences and benefit from global best practices in various economic and development fields.
The Egyptian experience in implementing economic reform
In this context, Dr. Ahmed Rostom, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, will participate in the 2026 meeting of the OECD Council at the ministerial level, chaired by Finland, and with the participation of South Korea and New Zealand as vice-chairs, at the organization’s headquarters in the French capital, Paris, during the period from 3 to 5 June 2026, under the title: “Preparing correct economic policies for open markets, growth and prosperity.”
Dr. Ahmed Rostom is scheduled to review the Egyptian experience in implementing the national program for structural reforms and its impact in supporting economic development in the first session of the ministerial meeting, which is entitled: “Achieving a balance between the goals and effects of economic policy.” He will also participate in the sub-session on “Financial Sustainability and Economic Policies,” which is being held within the activities of the second session of the meeting.

International coordination to advance economic development paths
The Minister also participates in the preliminary session to set the general framework for industrial policy discussions, and in the session held under the title: “Harmonizing industrial policies with open and fair trade and equal opportunities,” as well as in the sub-session on “Creating an environment supportive of investment.”
On the sidelines of the participation, Dr. Ahmed Rostom is scheduled to hold a number of bilateral meetings with senior officials of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, including a meeting with Mr. Matthias Cormann, Secretary-General of the Organization, Mr. Andreas Schall, Director of the Center for Global Relations and Cooperation, Ms. Manal Corwin, Director of the Organization’s Center for Tax Policy and Management, Mr. Luiz de Mello, Director of the Economics Department, and Ms. Elsa Belichowski, Director of the Organization’s Public Governance Department, He will also meet with Mrs. Ragenheidur Elin Arnadter, Director of the Development Center of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
Enhancing economic flexibility and increasing competitiveness
The meeting comes at a time when the global economy is witnessing profound and accelerating transformations, which impose the necessity of adopting policies capable of enhancing economic flexibility and raising productivity and competitiveness, in a way that supports the renewal of the industrial base, maintains the openness of markets, and stimulates innovation-based growth.
In this context, industrial policies have returned to occupy an advanced position among the tools for managing economic transformation, through their role in developing technological capabilities, increasing productivity, and enhancing economic security.
The meeting is scheduled to witness high-level discussions with the participation of member states and a number of partner countries, on how to employ industrial strategies and competitive markets to achieve long-term growth that contributes to improving living standards, in line with the comprehensive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) concerned with providing decent work, promoting economic growth, and supporting industry and innovation.

The discussions also address ways to achieve a balance between the objectives of industrial policies and their economic impacts, promote competition and effective regulation, maintain financial sustainability, support digital technology and emerging technologies, invest in skills, and align industrial policies with the principles of open and fair trade, in addition to enhancing the investment environment in a way that supports sustainable growth and economic prosperity.
In conclusion, Egyptian participation in the work of the Ministerial Meeting of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is of particular importance because it represents an opportunity to present national experiences in economic reform and enhance dialogue with international partners on best development practices.
