Rainforest Alliance certification is key to achieving sustainability

Rainforest Alliance Certification Key to Sustainability
Every time you buya cup of coffee, or a piece of chocolate, or even a banana, you probably think about the journey these products traveled before they reached you? Did it come from farms that respect the environment and protect workers’ rights, or was it through destroying forests and exploiting local communities?
This question is because it has become necessary to be more aware of the sources from which our products come in an era of increasing concern about climate change and biodiversity loss, and this is the role of Rainforest Alliance Certification, which represents a major step towards achieving a balance between economic development and environmental sustainability.
Hence,Earth Guardswill discuss in this article the profound impact of this certification on sustainable agriculture, and its close relationship with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations; So continue reading the article, and discover how your daily choices can contribute to building a more sustainable future.
How did it start?
First we should realize the nature of rainforests; They are forests that receive large amounts of rain that fall on them annually, and are likely to be the oldest living ecosystems on the planet Earth. They are also forests with very dense plant and tree cover, and rich in biological diversity, where more than half of the species of plants and animals live, even though they cover from 2% to 6% of the Earth’s surface.
Rainforests occupyvast areasin many geographical regions around the world. It is spread across the continents of the world, with the exception of Antarctica, and thus the largest of these forests in area is found around the Amazon River in South America, and the Congo River in Africa, and even the temperate coniferous forests in northwestern North America and northern Europe are considered rainforests.
The importance of rainforests imposes on humans the need to care for them and preserve their biological diversity. Because the imbalance in its nature leads – of course – to many problems, including climate change problems, which prevent the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in all fields. Therefore, there was an urgent need to organize these rich lands and protect them from every environmental threat.
What is Rainforest Alliance Certification?
This certification is granted by an organization known as the Rainforest Alliance, which is an international non-governmental organization operating in 70 countries, and was founded by the famous American environmental activist, Daniel Katz, in 1987.
This certificate is one of the most prominent global standards that guarantee that agricultural products are produced in ways that take into account the environment and all dimensions of sustainable development. This certificate represents a strict commitment to protecting environmental systems, promoting fair working conditions, and ensuring the sustainability of natural resources. Making it an essential element in global efforts to protect the planet.
Then obtaining this certificate is not a formal procedure, but rather a strict process that requires farms and companies to comply with a wide set of standards, which is what called for the alliance in 2018 to merge with the (UTZ Certified) program, which specializes in sustainable agriculture by working to achieve a set of social standards and environmental requirements.
This merger allowed for the development of the Sustainable Agriculture Standard (SAS) in its 2020 version, which is a standard that focuses on improving farmers’ incomes, enhancing transparency in supply chains, and reducing the negative environmental impact associated with agricultural activities.
The benefits and effects of testimony
Achieving agriculture is important to ensure food security and protect the environment. Therefore, the Rainforest Alliance certification plays a vital role in empowering farmers, especially in developing countries, as it ensures that they receive fair wages and provides them with the necessary training to adopt more sustainable agricultural methods. This is consistent with Goal No. (1) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) “Eradicate Poverty”, as fair practices help improve the standard of living of farmers and their families.
On the economic level, this certification helps farmers adopt more sustainable agricultural techniques. This reduces the impact of drought and floods, and ensures stable crop productivity in the face of rapid climate change, all of which achieves food security.
Protecting forests and biodiversity is one of the main goals of ensuring environmental sustainability, which is what this certificate aims to achieve. Forests are among the most important natural resources that support environmental balance and provide a home for millions of living organisms. However, deforestation at unprecedented rates threatens this balance. Which makes it necessary to take serious measures to protect it, in accordance with Goal (15) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), “Life on Land.”
Among these actions were the partner farming communities of the Rainforest Alliance in Indonesia, which planted 45,000 trees from 2020 to 2021 in areas adjacent to the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, with the aim of restoring the local ecosystem. The coalition also identified 80 farms located in wildlife corridors used by one of Sumatra’s endangered elephant species; Which helped grow plants that are compatible with the diet of these elephants.
For all of this,Earth Guardsemphasizes the necessity of strengthening cooperation between individuals, governments, and environmental organizations to protect natural resources and ensure their sustainability for future generations. Integration between these parties contributes to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and works to build a more balanced and just world.
