It is an international day that the peoples of the world use to support strategies for empowering women everywhere, which makes it one of the steps to strengthen their rights – socially, economically and culturally – to ensure the implementation of the aspirations and hopes of all parts of society.
This year – the year 2024 – is the second year in a row, in which the Earth Guards participate in the celebration of International Women’s Day, by highlighting the achievements of prominent Egyptian and Arab women and pioneers – scientifically and practically – in their fields; Therefore, in the coming days, the magazine will accompany you through a journey – a series of articles on International Women’s Day – expressing honorable feminist models whose professional career has shone in the skies of Egypt and the Arab world, and this is through achievements that have inspired women of the whole world. So that empowering them will be a just way of life and a form of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As for the heroine of this article, she is Dr. Sarah Abdel Gaber, “Assistant Professor in the Department of Nano Medicine at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology – Kafr El-Sheikh University,” whose scientific career was an example for those who wanted success.
This scientific journey began with her graduation from the German University in Cairo, where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy and Biotechnology, with a general distinction with honors. Then her career at the same university extended through her obtaining a Master’s and Doctorate degrees, and then the German Academic Exchange Service granted her several scholarships for applied study in the laboratories of major German universities. For its scientific excellence and the solidity of its research topics.
Dr. Sarah Abdel Jaber has realized the importance of using nanotechnology in modern medicine, especially in the field of combating cancer and diagnosing diseases. Desiring to achieve the sustainable development goal of good health.
Hence, Dr. Sarah Abdel Jaber became interested in photodynamic therapy, as an innovative therapeutic technique, as it relies on compounds extracted from chlorophyll derivatives, which are activated by light to produce active oxygen, which in turn kills disease causes, such as cancer cells and treatment-resistant bacteria.
Her research efforts based on the principles of sustainability have resulted in her obtaining the Green Chemistry Prize for Life Sciences, which is presented by UNESCO in the form of a certificate and proposed funding for one of Dr. Sarah Abdel Jaber’s research, through which she worked to achieve sustainability by transforming plant waste into compounds with economic therapeutic value.
Not only that, but Dr. Sarah Abdel Jaber had interests in the societal role and educational activities. So I participated in a mobile science lab, conducting experiments in front of middle school students in remote areas. It also focused on science camps, which aimed to simplify science for primary school students.
Dr. Sarah Abdel Jaber also has awareness-raising activities, such as her organizing role in an international workshop on alternative folk medicine, which was at the University of Zanzibar in Tanzania, and her participation in a workshop on leadership and excellence in the academic field.
In addition to her sustainable contributions throughout her scientific career, she participated in the international conference on dealing with medical waste in a sustainable manner, and the activities that accompanied it, such as the awareness day at the National Foundation for the Deaf to promote inclusivity in society. She also participated in the United Nations Climate Conference COP27 and the 2022 World Youth Forum, in which she was honored by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
Dr. Sarah Abdel Gaber is a valuable scholar and a person with diverse interests, and enjoys many memberships, such as: membership in the Egyptian Academy of Young Scientists, the Arab-German Academy for Sciences and Humanities, and the Committee for the Care and Use of Animals in Research Studies.
All of these scientific and applied efforts to the principles of sustainability in the field of medicine made the life of Dr. Sarah Abdel Jaber an honorable image of success, and a pioneering model of inspiration for women in the scientific research and health sectors, and all sectors.
