Enhancing ways of international cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization “UNIDO”

Egypt always seeks to enhance cooperation with international institutions concerned with achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and plans. Hence the effective cooperation betweenMinistry of International Cooperation and the Regional Office of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization “UNIDO”; In order to support partnerships in many areas related to green industries and industrial development, in addition to the development cooperation portfolio.

This constant endeavor was reflected in the meetingsDr. Rania Al-Mashat - Minister of International Cooperation - with the Regional Director of UNIDO - Dr. Patrick-Jean-Gelabert - and other officials, such as Professor Ahmed Rizk, “Deputy Representative of the Regional Office”, “Anakiara Secondoni”, “Industrial Development Expert”, and Jihan Bayoumi, “Programs Officer”. Energy".

The Minister explained in these meetings the importance of joint cooperation with the organization in light of the state’s priorities for achieving comprehensive and sustainable industrial development, through the Country Partnership Program “PCP” for the period from 2021-2025, and under the umbrella of the strategic framework for the partnership between Egypt and the United Nations for cooperation for sustainable development.

This international cooperation comes with awareness of the importance of the ongoing development cooperation portfolio, which is implemented by UNIDO in Egypt in cooperation with the relevant national authorities. Cooperation also includes promoting green industries, enabling manufacturing companies to move to renewable energy, in addition to examining ways to benefit from the comparative advantage of this international organization.

It is worth noting that UNIDO participates in the national platform of the “Novi” program, the axis of connection between water, food and energy projects, which includes national strategic projects related to climate change 2050, by benefiting from the organization’s expertise in the field of green hydrogen, and enhancing mitigation and adaptation efforts to the negative effects of climate change in Egypt.

These efforts - in addition to the above - aim to support the state’s efforts to achieve sustainable development in general, through five joint action groups, which are: enhancing human capital, comprehensive and sustainable economic development, resilience to climate change, efficient management of natural resources, governance, transparency and effective participation, and the comprehensive empowerment of women and girls.

As for the ongoing development portfolio in Egypt, it is considered the third largest portfolio of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in the world after China and India. With this portfolio, the organization is keen to continue strengthening its development partnerships with Egypt. In order to improve the national infrastructure and implement green industry projects.

This portfolio includes 18 projects in Egypt, worth $52 million. These projects include: the Trade and Industry Support Program, and the Program for Transition to a Circular Economy. The organization is also currently working to expand its operations. In order to support efforts to improve the standard of living of the most needy groups, and to enhance Egypt’s path towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This type of international partnerships bears fruit in all development projects, and increases the results of achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at all levels.
