The world is preparing for the next climate battle

The world is witnessing radical transformations due to climate change, which requires concerted global efforts. That is why the state of Azerbaijan will hostthe twenty-ninth Conference of the Parties (COP) at the end of this year, and there – in the capital, Baku – the whole world will have a date with global discussions on what has been achieved in climate goals since the Paris Agreement, and consideration of what is coming regarding reducing harmful emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change, as well as proposing a new global financing goal; In order to support developing countries affected by all climate issues.

The global climate conferences are a form of humanity’s treatment of those negative impacts left by the industrial sector since humanity entered the machine age. Therefore, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change came as a global charter to stand together in the face of environmental challenges that intensify day after day. It is an agreement signed by the countries of the world as part of the Earth Summit activities in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.

In preparation for this, the Australian city of Sydney hosted a working group between officials of the Azerbaijani Presidency of COP 29 and the European Union Commission for Climate Action. There, the appointed President of COP29 – Mukhtar Babayev – held a fruitful meeting with the Chairman of the European Union Commission for Climate Action – Wopke Hoekstra – who stressed that such meetings and preparations are capable of directing the course of the conference. The next climate change, technically and politically.

Hence, international parties are looking to enhance climate ambition, enable environmental action, and achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, those gathered in Sydney discussed the priorities, preparations and ambitions for this upcoming conference, especially with regard to reaffirming the countries’ commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuels, and agreeing on a new and promising goal of achieving fair and comprehensive climate financing.

The international dialogue that took place between the Presidency of the Conference and the European Union Commission for Climate Action also addressed the measures that could potentially be implemented regarding the use of renewable energy sources, the uses of green hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage, with the importance of strengthening the participation of civil society in implementing such green transformations.

Therefore,Earth Guards believes – according to these positive international preparations – that COP29 may be a milestone in the history of emissions reduction strategies, as well as the possibility of agreeing to establish an international carbon market under the Paris Agreement, with the activation of rules and guidelines that provide environmental safety, and enhance climate transparency and accountability.

Undoubtedly, such international efforts will not have an impact on the ground unless governments and civil society institutions stand united in the face of the dangers of climate change. Rising temperatures and increasing levels of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere – for example – have negative effects that harm the sustainability of our environmental systems, as water becomes polluted, agricultural lands become desertified, and sea levels rise, leading to the submergence of coastal lands, salinization of the soil, and other climatic effects that are harmful to the future of the planet Earth.
