It is very common that the cement industry is associated with environmental pollutants, but this has become a thing of the past in light of the continuous movement towards developing the cement industry and rebuilding the outlook on its investment market, and this is through two goals that must be combined, the first of which is: financial profit, and the second: environmental and social responsibilities, then working to achieve their goals; Therefore, it was necessary for the men of the cement industry, as a strategic industry, to implement policies that take into account these two goals, for the sake of a sustainable future.
In line with this environmental modernization of the cement industry, leading institutions committed to this sustainable approach, and at the head of these institutions wasCEMEX Cement (CEMEX Cement Corporation includes the Assiut Cement Factory and CEMEX Ready Mix Concrete), where it planned Serious steps towards re-evaluating the relationship between environmental work and the cement industry in Egypt.
Regarding these steps taken by CEMEX towards modernizing the cement industry – it viewed cement as the second most used material in the world after water, and hence it saw the method of its manufacture as of great importance. Therefore, CEMEX invested in alternative fuels, as well as in raw materials, which helped reduce fossil fuels in cement manufacturing. This approach not only reduced CEMEX’s carbon footprint, but also contributed to supporting the circular economy, by reducing waste and preserving natural resources.
After receiving the Earth Guards Shield, Ms. Zainab Hegazy – Director of Public Communications and Sustainability atCEMEX Foundation– confirmed that their research and development department is working on developing and innovating products and solutions for the low-carbon building materials industry, which falls under a production group called “Virtua”, and this is in an effort to achieve zero-carbon concrete. Not only this – that is, CEMEX aims to implement the environmental standards required by such heavy industries – but it also worked to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in its industrial operations, and this in cooperation with the Faculty of Agriculture at Assiut University, where it designed and implemented in Assiut Governorate the first garden rich in many plants that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

This competition was sponsored byMinistry of Social Solidarity, and its Minister, who spares no effort in supporting the environment and its field – Dr. Nevin Al-Qabbaj – where the Ministry and the magazine together launched this competition with objective evaluations and standards; So that it is a step towards strengthening “Egypt Vision 2030”.
The ceremony of handing over the Earth Guards Shield to CEMEX – and other institutions that won the shield – was vibrant with ideas and stimulating more achievements related to environmental work, and this was in the presence of the Minister of Social Solidarity – Dr. Nevin Al-Kabbaj – and the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives – Counselor Ahmed Saad El-Din – and a number of members of the House of Representatives and Speakers Its subcommittees, in addition to the stars and women of society, as well as media and art icons.
CEMEX’s victory was well-deserved, as this shield is a major step in this promising field – the field of environmental work – which reflects the aspirations of “COP27” – which was held under the presidency of Egypt last year – to implement the proposed recommendations regarding environmental work and its objectives, such as reducing harmful environmental impacts, adapting to them, and mobilizing the necessary funds for environmental projects.
It is worth noting that CEMEX is a global institution, and its growth continues to increase, especially in recent years, and it provides materials – as well as building products – of high quality, which are compatible with environmental obligations. CEMEX believes that business investment and environmental preservation are two linked goals.
