Egypt hosts the 12th World Urban Forum

The world realizes the importance of the impact of urbanization on the development of social, environmental and economic policies. Indeed, it is the most important topic in the new millennium. Because urban development has the ability to enhance environmental concepts, and also the ability to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in one way or another. Due to this extreme importance, the United Nations established the World Urban Forum in 2001 with a decision that brings the countries of the world into a global gathering to discuss urban issues. This gathering will be an opportunity to strengthen relations at the level of environmental and development practices. So that the feasibility of these practices can be proven to build a more sustainable world.

In implementation of this decision, the first session of the World Urban Forum was held in the Kenyan capital – Nairobi – in 2002, and since then the conference sessions have continued once every two years, bringing Egypt to a date – from November 4 to 8 – with the twelfth session of the “World Urban Forum WUF 12”, with wide international participation; Thus, Egypt becomes the first African country to host it in 20 years, and the second Arab country – after Abu Dhabi – to organize it, in cooperation between the Egyptian government – under the auspices of the Prime Minister – and the United Nations Human Settlements Program (Habitat –UN-Habitat).

In addition to shedding light on the Egyptian experience in sustainable urban development, the twelfth World Urban Forum will highlight Egypt’s efforts and what it has achieved so far in housing and sustainable development issues, and will work to measure the extent of the Egyptian government’s efforts in addressing the problems of slum areas, and the unprecedented development it has provided in infrastructure. It will also shed light on the Egyptian steps in the field of technological transformation of cities, new smart city projects such as the Administrative Capital and New Alamein, and other investment steps in the urban sector over the years. Past ten.

The most prominent topics of the forum

The World Urban Forum in its Egyptian version will witness the organization of 560 events, with the holding of an exhibition in which international and local organizations from 49 countries will participate. The forum will also witness 6 high-level dialogue sessions and 9 sessions on the challenges of sustainable urban development. All of this was organized by Egypt’s youth, who were trained by the National Training Academy in cooperation with the National Alliance for Civil Development Action and the Organizing Committee of the World Youth Forum. Cairo is preparing to receive this global event by providing 110 environmentally friendly buses to transport visitors – including some designated for people of determination – while launching a large-scale promotional campaign, which includes electronic screens throughout Cairo Governorate, and organizing tourist tours for participants in the forum. In order to visit historical monuments, and other procedures that will be the focus of the Egyptian government; So that the conference – and its recommendations – will come out in an optimal manner, and in a way that reflects the Egyptian pioneering role in the field of sustainable urban development, which will be a witness to what Egypt has achieved in terms of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in general.
