Egyptian universities in the “Times Higher Education” classification

Beginning with the “Times Higher Education” (THE) classification, one of the most prominent international university classifications, it is based on four basic criteria: the quality of teaching, the strength of scientific research, the transfer of knowledge, or what is known as the impact of research outside the university, and the extent of the university’s openness to the world through international cooperation and foreign students.

Recently published infographics showed that Egypt leads the Arab and African countries in the number of universities listed in the “Times Higher Education” classification for the year 2025, as the number of listed Egyptian universities reached 35 universities compared to 28 universities in 2024; This reflects the expansion of Egyptian universities in developing their educational and research systems, and their openness to international partnerships, which contributed to enhancing their competitiveness on the global stage.

Notable progress in the Spanish “Simago” classification

As for the Spanish “SCImago” classification, it differs from its predecessor in terms of its focus on research performance, scientific innovation, and the impact of institutions in society. This classification depends mainly on the quantity and quality of published research, the number of times it is cited, and the extent of universities’ contribution to innovative and technical projects.

The number of Egyptian universities included in it for the year 2025 reached about 52, compared to 51 in 2024, and only 15 in 2009, and Egypt advanced 12 global positions in the scientific publishing classification to reach 25th place globally, which is a remarkable progress that expresses the accumulation of knowledge that universities have achieved in recent years, and the increase in their presence in the global research community.

 A qualitative leap in the British “QS” classification

With regard to the “QS World University Rankings” classification, it attaches importance to academic reputation and the general impression of the academic community and the labor market, in addition to a number of other indicators, including the quality of graduates in the labor market, the number of international students, the ratio of faculty members to students, and the number of research citations per faculty member. The importance of this classification is highlighted in the fact that it combines academic performance and international openness; Which gives it a comprehensive dimension in the evaluation.

In 2025, Egypt topped the African countries, and came in second place in the Arab world in terms of the number of universities included in this classification, with 15 universities, compared to only 6 in 2020. The number of Egyptian universities within the classification of Arab universities also increased to 36 universities, compared to 22 in 2020; Which indicates the widening circle of universities that are valued in terms of reputation, quality and diversity.

Leadership in US News rankings

In 2025, Egypt once again occupied the lead in the Arab and African countries, with 29 Egyptian universities in the classification, compared to 27 universities in 2024, and only 11 in 2019. This jump confirms that Egyptian universities are not satisfied with publishing, but rather publish in places that have scientific weight, and their research reaches a wide international audience.

The progress of Egyptian universities in these prestigious international classifications is clear evidence of the strength of the national will to develop higher education and scientific research, by focusing on the quality of teaching, supporting scientific research, and expanding international partnerships, and the diversity of the criteria of these classifications shows that Egyptian universities are moving steadily towards building a strong scientific base and a competitive university environment capable of facing various challenges.
