The Minister of Petroleum inspects the expansion of the Gasco complex for the production of gas derivatives to achieve energy security

With increasing pressures on global energy markets, securing resources is no longer limited to the volume of production only. The concept of energy security has become more comprehensive, reflecting the ability of countries to manage their resources efficiently and ensure the sustainability of their supplies in the face of fluctuations. In this context, infrastructure projects for the oil and gas sector stand out as a fundamental pillar in enhancing this security, by increasing the efficiency of exploitation and maximizing the economic value of natural resources.

In Egypt, the petroleum sector is moving towards rapidly developing its operational and expansion capabilities, to accommodate increases in production, and repurpose these resources to serve the associated industries, most notably petrochemicals. This trend reflects a broader vision based on achieving energy security in parallel with maximizing added value, and enhancing integration between production and manufacturing, in a way that supports the national economy and keeps pace with the requirements ofsustainable development.

Expansions of the fourth production line

In this context, Engineer Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, inspected the trial operation of the new expansions and the fourth production line at GASCO’s Western Desert Gas Complex, in the presence of leaders of the petroleum sector, stressing that these expansions represent a strategic infrastructure that supports the sector’s ability to receive and process larger quantities of gas produced from the fields to ensure energy security, and to prepare and pump it through the national natural gas network to meet consumption needs, in addition to maximizing the benefit from its high-quality derivatives. Value.

He explained that the project contributes to directing gas derivatives after their separation to petrochemical factories as raw materials, which supports the localization of the manufacture of new products and reduces the import bill, especially since gas derivatives represent the backbone of the petrochemical industry, directing the need to maximize the benefit from gases rich in derivatives from new discoveries, by directing them to the separation factories of GASCO to achieve the highest economic value.

He also directed to maximize the benefit of current expansions in accommodating any future discoveries in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the seventh goal: clean and affordable energy, the eighth goal: decent work and economic growth, and the ninth goal: industry, innovation and infrastructure.

Increase production of gas derivatives and enhance supplies

During the visit, the Minister inspected some of the operational units in the complex, to ensure the efficiency of operation. He also listened to an explanation from Engineer/Mohamed Marzouk, President of GASCO, who explained that the new expansions, represented by the fourth production line, represent a strategic addition with a design capacity of 600 million cubic feet per day, which raises the total capacity of the complex to 1.5 billion cubic feet per day, and supports increasing the production of gas derivatives and enhancing local market supplies to ensure security. Energy.

He added that the actual operating rates for the expansions exceeded 500 million cubic feet per day, in preparation for reaching the full design capacity, stressing that the project reflects the ability of the Egyptian petroleum sector to implement major projects in accordance with the latest international systems, in a way that embodies the integration of national expertise and the competence of Egyptian cadres, and in support of achieving Goal (16) peace, justice and strong institutions, Goal (17) establishing partnerships to achieve the goals, and Goal (7) clean energy at affordable prices. Reasonable.

Western Sahara Gas Complex

The Western Desert Gas Complex is one of the most important projects of the petroleum sector in the field of separating gas derivatives and maximizing added value, as it receives gases from the Western Desert fields and gas from the Raven field in the northern Alexandria region, to produce a mixture of ethane and propane as a raw material for the petrochemical industry, in addition to extracting butane to reduce dependence on imports, as well as petroleum condensates to feed refineries and convert them into petroleum products, as well as commercial propane production. For export.

In summary, the expansion of the Gasco gas derivatives complex reflects a shift in the philosophy of energy resource management, from focusing on increasing production to maximizing value added through integration between extraction and industry. In this sense, energy security becomes the result of a more efficient system in absorbing production and directing it within industrial chains that reduce losses and support the sustainability of supplies, thus increasing the sector’s ability to confront fluctuations in global energy markets.

For its part,The Earth Guards Foundation appreciates the state’s efforts to expand the production of natural gas derivatives because they are consistent with the essence of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and are also a practical path that appears in raising the efficiency of resource use, enhancing local manufacturing, supporting industrial innovation, and reducing dependence on abroad. Hence, what is happening within this model is not limited to a technical modernization within the petroleum sector, as much as it reflects a reformulation of the role of energy as a tool for economic development and building a more flexible, integrated and sustainable economy.
