International Day of Education is a global movement for a sustainable future

TodayInternationalFor EducationA global movement for a sustainable future
On January 24 of each year, the world celebrates the International Day of Education, based on the United Nations General Assembly resolution issued on December 3, 2018, which declared this date an International Day of Education. Celebrating the vital role education plays in promoting peace, development and equality around the world.
So, in the past two days, UNESCO organized an event to celebrate International Education Day at its headquarters in Paris under the slogan “Artificial Intelligence and Education.” On that international day,Earth Guards will delve deeper into the search for innovative solutions to the environmental and educational challenges faced by societies, focusing on the role of education in building a sustainable future, and contemplating how Egypt can benefit from this experience. To strengthen the education sector and make it more sustainable.
The global education landscape in 2025
Education is a fundamental right for every human being, as stipulated in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which calls for the provision of education free of charge, at least in its primary and basic levels, provided that primary education is compulsory, and the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child affirms - in addition to the above - the necessity of making higher education available to all.
Education remains the cornerstone of achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, and within the framework of this vision statistics indicate that there are about 244 million children and adolescents around the world who are out of school, and that 617 million children and adolescents cannot read or perform basic mathematical operations, in addition to 763 million adults who are illiterate.
These numbers highlight the major challenges that stand in the way of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including ensuring quality, equitable and comprehensive education, and enhancing lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030.
In this context, UNESCO stresses the need to invest in education, as a means to enhance human capabilities, stressing the importance of transforming global commitments and initiatives into concrete actions. It also calls for strengthening prevention mechanisms, protecting marginalized groups, and ensuring access to quality and comprehensive education for all. Because it is a basic condition in efforts to achieve peace and sustainable development.
Artificial intelligence is a double-edged sword
This year, International Education Day invites us to think about how artificial intelligence can revolutionize education; Because artificial intelligence technologies open new horizons for improving education systems, yet they raise questions about how to preserve the human role in the learning process. Therefore, in the following lines, we discuss the opportunities that artificial intelligence offers us, and how we can harness its enormous potential. In order to achieve tangible progress in the field of education.
Artificial intelligence can be exploited in a personalized education system, which is an educational model that aims to meet the individual needs of each learner by customizing the content, methods, and educational objectives to suit his level, interests, and method of learning.
This type of education focuses on making the educational experience more effective and motivating, as each learner gets his own educational path that takes into account his strengths and weaknesses. This is through artificial intelligence, which has the ability to analyze learners’ data, such as academic performance, behavioral patterns, strengths and weaknesses. To provide personalized learning recommendations that help each learner achieve their goals.
Artificial intelligence algorithms also design educational plans that suit each student based on his needs and level. Educational platforms can, for example, suggest specific study units or interactive activities for each learner.
By using technologies such as translation applications, digital libraries, and chatbotsChatbots, learners can get instant answers to their questions, then help them address educational problems at any time. In addition, artificial intelligence can handle administrative tasks, allowing teachers to focus on teaching and mentoring.
But the rapid adoption of AI also presents challenges, as automated operating systems threaten to marginalize the role of teachers, and there is an urgent need to address ethical concerns, such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and equitable access to AI-driven tools.
Enhancing Personalized Learning
Artificial intelligence can play a pivotal role in bridging educational gaps and achieving personalized education that meets the needs of each individual student. For example, AI technologies can design personalized learning platforms that deliver educational content that matches the abilities and needs of each learner; Which contributes to improving the learning experience and its outcomes, especially in rural areas, where educational resources are few.
There is also teacher training, which is another area that can benefit from artificial intelligence, as customized training programs can be developed that provide immediate feedback to teachers. To help them improve their performance. Artificial intelligence tools can also be used to provide comprehensive analysis of educational performance, and help schools make informed decisions about developing curricula and teaching methods.
Investing in digital infrastructure
To make the most of artificial intelligence in education, priority must be given to developing digital infrastructure, including expanding Internet connectivity to reach remote areas, and equipping schools with modern technologies, such as smart boards and tablets.
Ethics in Artificial Intelligence
Integrating artificial intelligence into education requires developing policies that ensure compliance with ethical standards. Students’ data and privacy must be protected, while ensuring that artificial intelligence algorithms are free of biases, which may lead to inequality among students. In addition, controls must be put in place to prevent excessive use of automation (automation is a term taken from the English origin Automation, which is a term given to everything that works in an automated or autonomous way without human intervention) at the expense of human interaction. To ensure a healthy balance between technology and the desired educational role at all levels.
Public-Private Partnerships
Cooperation between the government, the private sector, and international organizations can play an important role in accelerating the pace of educational reform. Private sector companies working in learning technology can contribute to providing artificial intelligence tools and training programs, and non-governmental organizations can also support community initiatives, which increase community awareness of the importance of technological education.
Promoting a culture of lifelong learning
With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, continuous learning becomes an indispensable necessity; Therefore, specialized centers for lifelong learning can be established, and programs can be provided for retraining and refining skills to suit the requirements of the modern era. Promoting STEM education from an early age can prepare future generations for careers that rely on artificial intelligence. Which opens new horizons for growth and development.
In conclusion, celebrating International Education Day every year represents an opportunity to affirm the role of education in bringing about the required transformation, to meet the challenges of the digital age, and to ensure the preservation of the human character of the educational process, all of which meets the requirements of the present and the aspirations of the future in a sustainable manner.
