International Clean Energy Day combats fossil fuels

Climate change has become a reality that affects our daily lives directly, and not just numbers and statistics. Because high temperatures, severe drought, and strong winds are phenomena that threaten our existence on this planet, the transition to clean energy comes as an urgent necessity. In order to ensure a healthy and sustainable life.

Why do we switch to clean energy?

According toUnited NationsBurning of coal, oil and gas produces more than 75% of greenhouse gas emissions, and about 90% of all carbon dioxide emissions. To avoid the negative effects of climate change, these emissions must be reduced by approximately half by 2030, and reached zero by 2050.

In this context, the world celebrates today - January 26 - the International Clean Energy Day, which was declared by the United Nations General Assembly as an international day on January 26, 2009, the date of the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency, which was established to support the transition of all countries towards new energy; Therefore, this celebration comes to remind us of the importance of this issue, and provides us with an opportunity to clarify the importance of this matter, and to shed light on the efforts made to achieve a more sustainable future.

That's because every home in the world is an energy factory, and instead of relying on limited and volatile energy sources, we can generate the energy we need from inexhaustible sources such as the sun and wind. This transformation would provide the energy needed for our daily activities at affordable prices for all, and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels that harm the environment.

Although fossil fuels still represent more than 80% of global energy production, reliance on clean energy sources is growing, with the share of electricity generated from renewable sources now reaching 29% of the global electricity share. This shift is due to several reasons, including that it is available everywhere and its potential has not been fully exploited.

For this reason, the International Renewable Energy Agency indicated that 90% of the world’s electricity could be produced from clean energy by 2050. These sources give countries the ability to reduce dependence on imports, diversify their economies, and protect them from price fluctuations. Which enhances economic growth and provides new job opportunities. Therefore, the transition to clean energy must be accelerated.

How do we participate in building a sustainable future?

The transition towards clean energy is a goal that requires the combined efforts of all parties in an integrated manner. It is known that no party can achieve this goal alone; Governments play an essential role in developing policies and legislation that encourage investment in renewable energy. Which creates a suitable environment for developing new projects.

To achieve this goal, governments in various countries are seeking to accelerate this transformation, and among these endeavors is Egypt’s efforts in the field of clean energy, as it is a pioneer in this field in the Arab world, and ranks third in Africa in generating electricity through clean energy according toInternational Energy Agency report, and this is at a rate of 12% of energy generation sources.

One of the most prominent examples of its leadership is that it has established many major projects at the local and global levels, such as the Benban Solar Energy Project, one of the most prominent examples of these efforts, as it is considered one of the largest solar energy complexes in the world, and includes 32 stations with a total capacity of up to 1,465 megawatts.

Egypt has adopted theSustainable Energy Strategy, which is an ambitious strategy for transitioning to clean energy, and aims to achieve 20% of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2022 and 42% by 2035. To support this transition, the government is providing financial incentives and tax exemptions through the National Green Projects Platform Program "Novi"; Which enhances the attraction of investments to the renewable energy sector.

Within the framework of this government support, which provides a work environment that encourages investment, institutions and private sector companies come to play an important role in the transformation. By investing in research and development, you can discover new technologies that contribute to reducing clean energy costs and increasing its efficiency.

By adopting environmentally friendly production practices, these institutions contribute to reducing waste and enhancing the use of renewable energy in their operations, and developing products that rely on clean energy - such as electric cars - impacts on increasing the demand for that energy and changing society’s view of it.

The success of this transformation is not complete without the active participation of consumers. Individuals' daily choices directly affect the demand for clean energy. When consumers choose to use sustainable products or prefer sustainable means of transportation, they express their support for renewable energy. Which encourages companies to invest in such trends.

So, the roles in the transition to clean energy are integrated and interconnected. Companies provide technology and products, countries provide support and legislation, and individuals are the main driver of this transformation through their daily decisions.

In conclusion,Protectors of the Earth believes that International Clean Energy Day is not just an occasion, but rather a call for hard work and positive change. Switching to renewable energy has become an urgent necessity to protect our planet and the future of our coming generations.
