Great people in the history of science… between the formulator of gravity and the master of relativity

The history of science is filled with a large number of greats in various fields between different time periods. We highlight with you three of the most prominent scientists whose birth dates coincide with the months covered in the first quarter issue of 2023 ofHamat al-Earth Magazine; Let us briefly highlight their most important pioneering achievements.

January 4: Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton is considered one of the most prominent physicists and mathematicians throughout history. The British scientist who was born in 1643 laid the foundation for a large number of important scientific disciplines, such as:Calculus, optics, classical mechanics.

Sir Isaac Newton contributed greatly to the field of science during his lifetime. In addition to inventing calculus and providing a clear understanding of optics, his most important works were related to the development of the law of gravitation and its laws of motion.

Newton is also credited with making the first reflecting telescope, and he also developed a theory to interpret colors. Using a white light analysis prism.

Newton’s huge contributions to physics had a profound impact on what this science has reached so far. Therefore, many in the scientific community call him “the father of modern physics.”

February 26: Ahmed Zewail

Ahmed Zewail is considered one of the most prominent scientists in our contemporary history, due to his unique contributions to chemistry and physics, the most notable of which was his invention of a laser-powered microscope that can photograph in a time of femtosecond (one millionth of a billionth of a second).

Zewail’s revolutionary invention enabled us to see the different stages of the interactions of molecules of chemical compounds, and how bonds are broken and formed. He was even called “the father of femtochemistry.”

Zewail won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999, for his pioneering invention. His scientific contributions were not limited to this, but during his life he published more than 350 scientific papers in various fields.

Dr. Zewail received a large number of honors during his busy career, perhaps the most notable of which is having his name recorded in letters of light in the list of the 29 most important scientists in the field of lasers in the history of the United States.

March 14: Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was born in Germany in 1879, and is considered one of the most prominent physicists in history. Einstein is famous for his theory of special and general relativity. To deserve – well-deservedly – the title of “Father of Modern Physics,” a title shared by both “Newton” and “Galileo.”

At the age of twenty-six – in 1905 – Einstein obtained a doctorate degree, and held many practical positions during his life.

Einstein’s theories explained many cosmic phenomena that classical physics failed to explain, and enabled us to understand the universe differently, including our view of space, time, gravity, and the entire universe.

During his busy scientific career, his scientific production was prolific, as he published more than 300 practical papers. Perhaps one of the most prominent stations in his life was his obtaining the Nobel Prize in Physics for the year 1921. In recognition of his research on the photoelectric effect.
