Great people in the history of science..A path from physics and electricity to the invention of the telephone
The history of science is filled with a large number of greats in many fields between different time periods. Hence, we highlight with you three of the most prominent scientists whose birth dates coincide with the months covered by the first quarter issue of 2024 of the Earth Guards magazine. Let us briefly highlight their most important pioneering achievements.
January 8, 1942: Stephen Hawking
He is “Stephen Hawking”, who set the most wonderful examples of patience with illness, and who accomplished what healthy people could not accomplish – the famous British scientist, who made major contributions to theoretical and cosmic physics, including his important scientific theses about black holes, and the extent of their influence on our understanding of the evolution of the universe.
Hawking, in addition to the above, delved into the study of Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity. He then announced new and controversial explanations about cosmic phenomena, such as time and space, as he succeeded in merging the theories of general relativity and quantum mechanics. Until he concluded that black holes emit rays into space, which is the theory of “Hawking radiation.”
In general, Hawking played a prominent role in encouraging research on alien life and its relationship to cosmic sciences, and he was also able to simplify physics for the public, through books and lectures. This made physics more accessible to everyone.
February 18, 1745: Alessandro Volta
Alessandro Volta is an Italian physicist, famous for his outstanding achievements in the field of electricity, and his innovations were pivotal in the advancement of science and the development of electrical engineering. One of the most prominent of these innovations is his invention of the electric battery in 1800, which is considered the basis for the development of many modern technologies.
Thanks to his fruitful work, Alessandro Volta gained widespread recognition from the scientific and industrial community, so the unit of electrical power was named after him, “volt.” In honor of his pioneering contribution to the field, Volta batteries are used in a variety of applications, from small electronic devices toelectric vehicles.
Alessandro Volta is considered a symbol of Italian genius and scientific innovation, and his scientific legacy continues to inspire scientists and researchers around the world. March 3, 1847: Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander Graham Bell is an American scientist and inventor, best known for inventing the telephone in 1876, which greatly changed the world. He also contributed to the development of other technologies such as voice and telephone messaging technology. These pioneering efforts in the field of communications made him a prominent figure in the history of science and technology.
Bell’s contribution was not limited to the telephone alone, but rather he led many other technical innovations in the field of communications and engineering industries. He was a pioneer in developing methods of audio and video transmission. Which contributed to expanding the scope of communication in an unprecedented way.
Bell left his profound mark on the course of technological history, and his contributions were honored with many awards and appreciations, including an honorary award from the American Communications Association; May his legacy live on in modern communications technologies, and continue to inspire scientists and engineers around the world.
