Hence, the importance ofsustainable developmentin education, as it aims to provide quality and equitable education opportunities for all, and to ensure the sustainability of these opportunities in the long term. Sustainable development in education is considered a means to promote economic and social development. Sustainable education can lead to improving the level of graduates, preparingfuture cadres, increasing individuals’ income, and the economic return in general. Education based on the principles of sustainable development can also contribute to enhancing awareness, community participation, and supporting individual and collective capabilities.

The concept of sustainable education

The concept of sustainable education revolves around the principles of digital education and establishing the meanings of sustainability among students. It is an educational model that values ​​human capabilities and enables them to achieve social, economic and environmental goals. Sustainable development in education seeks to provide quality education opportunities, regardless of gender, race, religion or culture. It aims to achieve equality in educational opportunities and reduce gaps between students. Therefore, sustainable development in education enhances social justice and contributes to building more developed and prosperous societies.

The concept of sustainable development in education also includes providing education in a way that enhances the capabilities and skills necessary for sustainable development, increasing awareness of environmental issues and sustainable development issues, teaching students how to think critically, and innovating sustainable solutions to global challenges.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Education

We mentioned previously that among the goals of sustainable development in education are: achieving comprehensive, quality education for all, and promoting appropriate educational opportunities. The other goals are to enhance skills and provide technical and vocational training opportunities. By integrating sustainable development into education, we can provide infrastructure for educational institutions to ensure advanced education for students and a positive learning environment for all.

One of the most important goals of sustainable education is: promotingscientific research and innovation in the field of education, developing educational curricula, to keep pace with the latest scientific findings in this regard, enhancing international cooperation in the field of education, exchanging relevant experiences and successful practices between countries, and increasing awareness of sustainable development and environmental, social and economic issues.

There is another aspect of sustainable education that we must look at with interest, which is the concept of gender equality in access to quality education, especially since human resources are the most important thing that must be sponsored by relevant programs and initiatives. Therefore, Egypt is moving forward in promoting the principles of gender equality in education. This is something that is reflected in the goals of “Egypt Vision 2030”, as its second goal emphasizes the importance of equality in rights and opportunities – in education and elsewhere – between the sexes and all groups of society, empowering women, and increasing their participation in development.

All of this is consistent with the objectives of Goal No. (4) of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):Quality education. These goals reflect the principle of equal access to quality education, and call for affordable technical and vocational education, and for all people to be familiar with the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. In addition, the objectives of this goal seek to provide improved infrastructure and increase the number of qualified teachers indeveloping countries.

Combat climate change through sustainable education

Dealing with climate change requires an integrated approach that does not neglect the role of education in environmental issues. Through education that seeks to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we can teach people in all societies how to address climate threats.
