International Day for the Elimination of Waste: A step towards sustainability

In a world where the pace of consumption is accelerating and environmental challenges are increasing, the issue of waste management stands out as one of the most prominent obstacles hindering the achievement of sustainable development. As part of international efforts to address this crisis, the International Day for the Elimination of Waste is celebrated on March 30 of each year. In this article,Earth Guards will highlight this day as an opportunity to call for the promotion of sustainable production and consumption patterns, stimulate innovation in product design, and shift towards a circular economy that preserves natural resources and reduces environmental impact.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted this day in December 2022, in a step that reflects the international community’s commitment to addressing the environmental challenges resulting from waste. The International Day for the Elimination of Waste aims to enhance awareness of the importance of reducing waste, and to encourage the adoption of sustainable practices in production and consumption, in a way that supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal (11) “Sustainable Cities and Communities,” and Goal (12) “Responsible Consumption and Production.”

The United Nations Environment Program andthe United Nations Human Settlements Programorganize this day, where Member States, civil society organizations, the private sector, and other stakeholders are invited to participate in activities aimed at spreading awareness of “zero waste” initiatives at all levels.

A global crisis that requires urgent solutions

Statistics indicate that the world produces between 2.1 and 2.3 billion tons of solid waste annually, while about 2.7 billion people lack basic waste collection services, which increases the severity of health and environmental crises, and deepens social gaps. As the current situation continues, the amount of waste is expected to rise to 3.8 billion tons by 2050, which will exacerbate climate crises.

The fashion and textile industry is a prominent example of the impact of unsustainable consumption patterns on the environment. This sector is witnessing rapid growth in production and consumption, exceeding current sustainability efforts, and leading to serious environmental, economic and social impacts, especially in countries of the Global South. Clothing production doubled between 2000 and 2015, yet up to 92 million tons of textile waste is produced annually, which is the equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothes being burned or sent to landfill every second.

The key to overcoming waste

Addressing this challenge requires a radical change in production and consumption patterns, and moving from a linear economy based on (extraction - manufacturing - disposal) to a circular economy, which depends on (design - use -Reuse), and this approach depends on reducing waste through reusing, repairing, and recycling products, which contributes to reducing resource consumption and reducing pollution.

To achieve this transformation requires integrated efforts from all sides, as governments play an essential role in advancing the transition towards a circular economy, by enacting legislation that imposes the expansion of product responsibility, setting strict standards to regulate the use of harmful chemicals, and investing in effective recycling infrastructure. At the same time, environmental organizations and civil society organizations contribute to raising environmental awareness and launching initiatives that promote a culture of responsible consumption.

The private sector has a fundamental role in designing repairable and recyclable products, and adopting business models that support the circular economy, such as product rental or resale services. At the individual level, the shift towards sustainability requires adopting conscious purchasing habits, reducing reliance on short-lived products, and investing in more sustainable, repairable and reusable options.

Based on this comprehensive approach, Earth Guards emphasizes that eliminating waste is an essential factor in confronting environmental challenges and achieving sustainability; Through effective waste management, adopting the circular economy, and promoting environmental awareness; Resource depletion can be reduced and pollution reduced, paving the way towards a more sustainable future.
