Principles of Environment and Development Ethics

I believe that societies are built on the values of charity, altruism, harmony and inspiration, and then they become more developed, balanced and sustainable societies. Therefore, the Arab community must make these four the core and foundation of its life. Rather, we must all be a role model for cooperation, cohesion, and sustainable living through these concepts. Therefore, in this article, I will explain the extent of the relationship and the reality of the link between ethical concepts, environmental principles, andsustainable development.

Ethics of our environment

Benevolence, altruism, harmony, and inspiration are moral, spiritual, and societal concepts that overlap in their meanings, but each of them has special connotations. Charity is to do good to others and provide assistance to them in a way that goes beyond normal requirements. This includes giving generously and caring for the well-being of others. It also includes all forms of righteousness and benevolence, whether this is in work, money, or advice and guidance.

Charity is not a slogan or a buzzword, but rather an embodiment of four trends that extend over 360 degrees in all aspects of life, and express the highest human values and the lofty, selfless spirit, and reflect human, social and environmental responsibility.

With regard to charitable work, a person shows his greatest strength when he extends his hand to others with help; Providing food, water, medicine, and shelter to the displaced or refugees, or supporting children’s education - all of these are images that reflect the value of the human being in a world fraught with conflicts.

As for altruism, it is preferring the interest of others over personal interest, even at the expense of your comfort or your own interest. It is a creation that reflects self-sacrifice; Because you give preference to others over yourself, and put their interests ahead of your interests, in confirmation of the Almighty’s saying: “And they give preference to themselves, even if they are in poverty.[الحشر: 9]; Then feelings of mercy, compassion, and chivalry spread throughout society, and this is rewarded with blessings in livelihood and longevity.

If we want to know the truth about harmony, let us look at the consensus and harmony between individuals or groups when peace, understanding and cooperation prevail. It is a principle that expresses positive and peaceful relations that help build a cohesive society. The stronger the harmony, the more cohesive the society and the stronger the nation, and the nation becomes homogeneous and interconnected, with fruitful and beneficial work prevailing among its members. Then life becomes closer to idealism and maturity.

Regarding inspiration, I say: It is a state of stimulation and excitement for thought and creativity, and it comes from an internal or external source, to be man’s fuel for progress and construction. We must realize that inspiration only occurs with good preparation, and in the presence of bonds of familiarity, love, respect, and trust. It is our tool for encouragement, motivation and positive change.

Inspiration is evident in historical figures such as prophets, leaders, scientists, inventors, thinkers, philosophers, and others. We can also find inspiration in the doctors and nurses who work on the front lines during epidemics, or the teachers who dedicate themselves to educating children in remote areas.

In brief, benevolence relates to doing good, altruism relates to favoring others, harmony relates to harmony and understanding, and inspiration relates to stimulating thought and creativity; All of them are principles and morals that create goodness and blessing in our lives and our societies.

I see these principles as fully represented in the environment around us, something that clearly reflects the truth of our Islamic religion, which made us successors in the land, as it is a place of worship, which must be kept pure and clean.

So, the principles of Islam call on us to sustain the land, honesty, and balance with nature, and this includes creating security, preserving health, providing food and shelter, as well as raising awareness of the problems of water scarcity and pollution, and this is through linking water, faith, wisdom, and other mechanisms for converting to green energy, and promoting the culture ofReuse and recycling.

Sustainable Steps

But where do we start? I answer without a doubt that the beginning is in education. Environmental ethics and development principles cannot be linked to society and its individuals without developing educational curricula that focus on environmental sustainability and sustainable development. This is an approach that our children learn from their first years in school.

Then comes awareness, and awareness is a concept that includes multiple means, especially since the modern era has become fraught with various means of communication, which in turn raises the importance of activating workshops and holding awareness seminars. To consider the importance of protecting the environment and preserving its resources.

That educational and awareness aspect is the image that Arab society should have on its path towards comprehensive sustainability, and it is the base of the reform pyramid, before the top of the pyramid comes, represented by technology and innovation, and supporting scientific and technological research, which provides innovative environmental solutions.

I view this research and technological support as a strategy to transform from traditional concepts to revolutionary concepts that rely on renewable resources, and this includes developing waste management techniques and converting them into usable resources.

And if I talked about solidarity among members of society - which I see clearly in my morals of benevolence and altruism - then the best form of this solidarity is partnership between the private and public sectors, which is a process that requires firm government policies, implemented by official institutions, through which tax incentives are provided to companies that rely on sustainable practices.

Community Participation

All of this comes under a large umbrella called community participation. It is the right path after developing education and implementing appropriate policies, in order to ensure a clean environment with available resources, and this can be through organizing environmental initiatives, which involve members of society in the process of extracting sustainable solutions to all of our environmental problems.

In general, we must activate the appropriate mechanisms to confront the challenges of environmental action, and these mechanisms are: education and awareness, technology and innovation, government policies, and community participation, in addition to international cooperation, encouraging green entrepreneurship, then research and development, and other environmental protection mechanisms and policies; Starting from our morals to our culture and education.

Those were the ideas that I believed in since I became aware of the reality of the current era in which we live, and how we need faith in the environment around us, not because it is a matter of luxury, but rather based on the fact that greenness in every aspect of our lives is a crucial issue; Sustainable green living is the essence of ethics.
