But the truth...the concept of sustainable development and its perceptions

النائب طارق رضوان

Sustainable development is an important and necessary concept for preserving the environment and achieving social and economic development in a sustainable manner. Despite this importance, there are some misconceptions about this concept, which can affect our understanding of it and the measures that can be taken to achieve it.

Many people have come to link sustainability with the natural world and the phenomena it witnesses, such as climate change. Because some media outlets with a narrow perspective focus only on global environmental phenomena; But the truth is that sustainability is a more comprehensive concept, and environmental sustainability is only one aspect out of three other aspects of sustainability.

Ifenvironmental sustainabilityis focused on conserving biodiversity - that means protecting water, reducing waste, saving energy, increasing recycling, using sustainable transport, eliminating or reducing the use of plastic, and protecting plants and animals, And other goals - There is another aspect of sustainability, which is social sustainability, and this aspect is concerned with improving the quality of living of different groups and segments of society. For example, social sustainability focuses on security, improved health, education, and fair distribution of opportunities and wealth.

There is also economic sustainability, which complements the environmental and societal sustainability systems, as it ensures that the financial and development systems do not stand in the way of their own sustainability. This is achieved by creating new business models with fair and effective resources, such as the economic system based on renewable resources, or the circular economy system. Thus, it becomes clear to us that all three previous aspects of sustainability are closely linked to each other.

Another misconception is the belief that sustainable development requires limiting economic growth. Some people believe that economic growth is the cause of many environmental and social problems, and therefore it should be reduced. But the truth is thatsustainable development aims to achieve economic and social development in a balanced manner, while preserving the environment. Hence, sustainable economic growth can help improve the quality of life and achieve comprehensive development.

There is also another misconception, which is to place the responsibility for sustainable development on governments and companies only. But the truth is that individuals should have a contribution to achieving it, and this is by making sustainable decisions in their daily lives, preserving the environment, and educating others about the true importance of preserving the environment. In addition, local communities and non-governmental organizations can play an important role in achieving sustainable development, by organizing sustainable activities and projects, and raising awareness of environmental dangers.

Another misconception about the concept of sustainable development is that it requires living in a primitive way, abandoning technology and progress. But the truth is that sustainable development can be better achieved through the use of technology and the implementation of new innovations that help improve the efficiency of services and reduce waste. Technology can be used in a responsible manner to achieve sustainable development, instead of being a factor in environmental pollution and a cause of wasting natural resources.

In the end, there is a final misconception about the concept of sustainable development, which is that it requires great sacrifices by individuals and societies. But the truth is that sustainable development can be achieved sustainably without the need for major sacrifices. By making small sustainable decisions in our daily lives - such as using recycled bags and reducing water and energy consumption - we can move towards sustainable development.
