How to make Eid Al Adha sustainable and environmentally friendly

Muslims around the world celebrate on the tenth day of the month of Dhul-HijjahEid Al-Adha, that ritual that comes to crown the great days by which the Lord - Glory be to Him - swore at the beginning of Surah Al-Fajr (And the dawn and the ten nights), during which Muslims will draw closer to God. -Glory be to Him- by glorifying, praising, and glorifying; Thanks and praise for the success in worship and obedience in these blessed days, between hearts that won the Hajj to the Sacred House of God, and other hearts that long to perform the greatest pillar and visit the most honorable Prophet.

Muslims also draw closer to God Almighty by offering sacrifices. Hoping for the satisfaction of the Most Gracious, and a desire to obtain the great reward and the great reward, and in commemoration of the sacrifice of the Prophet of God, Abraham, his son Ishmael - peace and blessings be upon them - in obedience and submission to the command of the Lord - Glory be to Him -.

Despite the great purposes and noble intentions of celebrating Eid al-Adha, of offering sacrifices to distribute them to loved ones, relatives, friends, and the needy; To strengthen the bonds of love and spread joy, to wear new clothes and go out to parks and various destinations, but some wrong habits among some, and the lack of awareness among others, may lead to transforming the Eid from a divine gift into a human ordeal that harms the environment with all its components, including humans, animals, soil, water, and air.

Eid al-Adha, like other religious holidays, often has a significant impact on environmental resources, as food, drinks, and clothing are manufactured and prepared in an extravagant manner. Which leads to a negative impact on the environment. As a result of different types of pollution resulting from celebration activities.

As we know, Eid al-Adha begins with prayer in which men, women and children gather, and the surroundings of the prayer site often suffer after the completion of the garbage and waste spreading throughout the place; As a result of distributing sweets and buying toys and balloons, which are transported by the air to other nearby places to accumulate in an unhealthy manner.

After that, the sacrifices are offered, but unfortunately, duringEid al-Adha, many people sacrifice in front of their homes, roads, and other public places, which are often not cleaned later of the skin, remaining fat, intestines, limbs, etc., not to mention the smell. Also, large amounts of water are used to wash the sacrifices, and this polluted water is not collected for proper drainage. Suitable.

This is followed by preparing special foods and meat in different styles at home. In preparation for the visit of relatives, neighbors and well-wishers, which causes a large waste of food; The number of dishes and the amount of food prepared is usually much greater than the number of visitors, and this practice is repeated throughout the days of Eid, whether at breakfast, snacks, or lunch and dinner.

Over the successive years, celebrations have increased with the increase in the purchase of consumer goods, food and drinks per person, and people have become more extravagant, as large segments of society can afford this extravagance as a form of generosity and celebration, but the ability to bear the costs does not in any way mean an increase in waste.

All of this leads to an increase in the consumption of natural resources at greatly accelerated rates, and an increase in the amounts of waste and waste (between organic, plastic, metal, and other waste), which has a significant negative impact on the components of the environment in which we live.

The one who looks at the above is well aware that all of this is very far from the teachings of the true religion, as the Prophet - may God’s prayers and peace be upon him - says: “No harm or harm,” just as God - the Almighty and Majestic - forbade extravagance and extravagance in Surat Al-Isra, saying: (And give the relative his due. And the poor and the wayfarer, and do not spend extravagantly. * Indeed, the spendthrifts are brothers of the devils, and Satan is ungrateful to his Lord). Surah “Al-An’am” by saying: (...And eat and drink, and do not be extravagant. Indeed, He does not like the extravagant).

You may be wondering now: “How can I celebrate Eid al-Adha without harming the environment? And how can I have a role in educating those around me about the required consumer behavior?”

Here are some things you can do to make Eid Al Adha sustainable and environmentally friendly:

  • Take your sacrifice to approved slaughterhouses and designated butcher shops, and if you have to do it at home, be careful not to leave any leftovers (skins, etc.) and clean up after yourself.
  • Dispose of the sacrifice waste in a healthy manner by placing it in tightly sealed bags before disposing of it in the garbage.
  • Get rid of plastic bags When you go grocery shopping or holiday shopping, remember to bring a cloth bag with you or reuse an old plastic bag. Less plastic consumption means less harm to the environment.
  • Replace disposable plastic plates and cups during celebrations with reusable paper products, as paper is easier to recycle and less harmful to the environment.
  • Provide foods in portions appropriate to the number of people.
  • Serve drinks in small cups to reduce waste.
  • Repackage and repackage food scraps appropriately, and distribute them to those most in need instead of throwing them away.
  • Reduce the use of water for ablution and bathing.
  • Use a reusable water bottle.
  • Reduce your energy use, especially during this period of increasing electricity consumption. As a result of using air coolers, so do not forget to turn off electrical appliances or lighting when you leave the room.
  • Plant a tree. You can also buy seeds and give them to your family and friends to plant them.
