International partnerships and cooperation with global development organizations represent a fundamental pillar for supportingindustrial development efforts, in light of the opportunities they provide for exchanging experiences, transferring technology, and strengthening institutional and technical capabilities, which contribute to developing national industries and raising their productive and competitive efficiency, especially in light of the rapid global economic changes and the challenges they impose that require the adoption of more sustainable development models and the ability to keep pace with industrial transformations. In this context, international cooperation stands out as one of the engines supporting achieving sustainable development, by promoting the shift towards green industries, supporting innovation, raising the efficiency of resource use, and developing industrial value chains, which contributes to enhancing economic growth, creating job opportunities, increasing exports, and consolidating the position of national industries within regional and international markets, within the framework of a development vision aimed at building a more flexible and sustainable economy and the ability to achieve comprehensive development.

Accelerating the pace of comprehensive industrial development

In this context, Engineer Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, chaired the meeting of the Steering Committee of the Egypt Country Partnership Program (PCP), implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in the presence of Dr. Patrick Jean Gilabert, Regional Director of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in Egypt, Dr. Jihan Bayoumi, Deputy Regional Director of UNIDO, and Mr. Walid Gamal El Din, Chairman of the General Authority for the Canal Economic Zone. Suez, representatives of ministries and concerned authorities, and development partners.

During the meeting, the executive position of the program was reviewed, and the most prominent achievements achieved in the targeted industrial sectors during the last period were monitored, in addition to shedding light on the six main objectives of the project, which include industrial policy and governance, investment promotion, green industry, smart cities and sustainable industrial zones, developing value chains, and keeping pace with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

This is in addition to the features of the future action plan that is based on accelerating the pace of comprehensive industrial development, in line with the comprehensive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal (8) Decent Work and Economic Growth Goal (9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, as well as the goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the national strategy for developing industry and increasing exports, and mechanisms for raising the industrial competitiveness of the Egyptian product and increasing its ability to access global markets.

Promoting innovation and supporting the human element

The Minister stressed that the Egypt Country Partnership Program (PCP) plays a pivotal role in supporting the state’s plans to achieve a real productivity boom, especially since the projects implemented by the program intersect with various sectors to support innovation and build the capabilities of human resources working in Egyptian factories, in parallel with creating an attractive investment environment that enhances partnership between the public and private sectors.

 He also pointed out the importance of the projects implemented within the framework of the program, which are consistent with the objectives established by the Ministry’s strategy to promote Egyptian industry and achieve industrial development, pointing to the importance of the technical support provided by UNIDO to the Ministry with regard to providing data and information that guide decision makers and industrial policy makers to ensure the achievement of the desired objectives and measure the results.

The partnership with UNIDO is a role model for fruitful international cooperation that is consistent with the comprehensive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal (16) peace, justice and strong institutions, and Goal (17) convening companies to achieve the goals, and the Ministry of Industry is committed to providing all facilitations to UNIDO to implement its projects in Egypt, which contributes to the localization of technological industries, and transforming Egypt into a leading regional center for manufacturing and export based on global sustainability standards.

Green transition and circular economy projects

In a related context, Engineer Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, held a bilateral meeting with Dr. Patrick Jean Gilabert, Regional Director of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Egypt, to discuss the organization’s projects in Egypt for the current and future phase within the framework of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During the meeting, the two parties reviewed a number of projects currently being implemented by UNIDO in Egypt in the areas of green transformation in local industry, in addition to reviewing energy efficiency projects, clean energy conversion projects within industrial complexes, and industrial waste management mechanisms to support the circular economy.

From the above, it is clear that these projects guarantee the achievement of Goal (7) clean and affordable energy, Goal (8) decent work and economic growth, Goal (9) industry, innovation and infrastructure, Goal (12) responsible consumption and production, and Goal (13) climate action.

Rationalizing water resources and providing support to industrial facilities

The Minister pointed out that energy rationalization projects, especially water resource rationalization, are of utmost importance. Especially since the industrial sector is aware of the issue of new and renewable energy, but it needs to raise awareness of the importance of water rationalization in industrial processes. As a resource that is used in many vital industries, preserving it from waste will contribute significantly to achieving commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

For his part, Dr. Patrick Gilabert, Regional Director of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Egypt, praised the ongoing cooperation between UNIDO and the Egyptian government, and the organization’s compatibility with national efforts aimed at improving local industrial capabilities, noting that UNIDO’s ongoing portfolio in Egypt is the organization’s largest portfolio in the world, as it includes 23 projects aimed at providing technical support to local industrial facilities in areas most notably energy rationalization, green projects, and Developmental.

In light of the themes and projects reviewed at the meeting, it is clear that the partnership between the Ministry of Industry and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) constitutes an integrated model for reformulating the path of industrial development in Egypt on more sustainable and efficient foundations.

This partnership also reflects a strategic direction towards building a national industry capable of adapting to the requirements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, through localizing technology, enhancing innovation, and raising the efficiency of resource use, thus consolidating Egypt’s position as a competitive regional industrial base.

The Earth Guards Foundation confirms that cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) aims to improve industrial performance indicators and establish a long-term development path linking economic growth, protecting resources, and achieving comprehensive sustainability.
