The carbon footprint…a dialogue session within the activities of the Middle East and Africa Industry Fair

The carbon footprinthas become one of the most important environmental indicators that measure the extent of the impact of industrial activities on the climate; Because it is the cornerstone of global efforts working to combat all aspects of climate change, such as global warming.

With the acceleration of global climate change, it has become necessary for industrial institutions to adopt accurate methodologies to measure and reduce their emissions, ensuring a balance between social justice, economic growth, and environmental protection.

In this context,The Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality, led by Dr. Khaled Sofi, seeks to establish a culture of measuring the carbon footprint in the industrial sector. In support of the transition towards a sustainable economy, and to achieve all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in accordance with “Egypt Vision 2030.

Therefore, the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality organized a dialogue session within the activities of the “Middle East and Africa Industry Exhibition 2025” in its first edition, and the sixth session of the “Smart Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics Exhibition for the Middle East and Africa”; This is whatThe Earth Guards Foundation highlights, within the dimensions of sustainable development, and within the framework of the axes of the national agenda “Egypt Vision 2030”; So keep reading.

Carbon footprint fights climate change

Within this national trend towards enhancing the transition to a sustainable economy and achieving the goals of “Egypt Vision 2030”, this dialogue session was titled: The mechanism for amending carbon limits to enhance understanding and knowledge of the importance of measuring the carbon footprint, and contributing to confronting climate change; With the aim of achieving a green, environmentally friendly industry.

The importance of this specialized dialogue session comes because it is part of the activities of: the Industry Exhibition for the Middle East and Africa, and the Exhibition for Intelligent Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics for the Middle East and Africa, under the patronage of His Excellency Mr. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, during the period from 9 to 11 of this November, and under the slogan “Industry and Transport Together to Achieve Sustainable Development.”

The importance of measuring the carbon footprint

The session “Mechanism for Amending Carbon Limits to Enhance Understanding and Knowledge of the Importance of Measuring the Carbon Footprint and Contributing to Confronting Climate Change with the Aim of Reaching a Green, Environmentally Friendly Industry” was held under the supervision of Dr. Reham Badir, Director of Quality at the Environmental Performance Unit of the Egyptian General Organization for Standardization and Quality. This came with high-level participation from leaders of industry and sustainable development and an elite group of experts and officials, including:

  • Dr. Khaled Sofi, “President of the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality.”
  • Dr. Nermin Abu Al-Atta, “Adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister for Sustainable Development.”
  • Engineer Ikram Saeed Hassan, “Head of the Environmental Performance Unit at the Egyptian General Organization for Standardization and Quality.”
  • Dr. Reham Farouk, “Secretary General of the The Earth Guards Foundation.”

Specifications and quality are a pillar of the industry

This session confirmed that the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality is working to integrate environmental dimensions into the Egyptian standards system, in line with the global shift towards a low-carbon economy. The application of carbon footprint measurement standards has become a prerequisite for enhancing the competitiveness of the Egyptian product in global markets, especially with the implementation of the carbon limits adjustment mechanism (CBAM) in the European Union.

Hence, the focus in this session was on the need to understand the relationship between the mechanism for adjusting carbon limits and measuring the carbon footprint; The first represents a means of controlling industrial markets according to sustainability standards, while the second represents a tool for measuring the actual environmental performance of institutions.

Specifications and quality for a sustainable industry

The session highlighted the pivotal role played byThe Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality in supporting the national industry through developing the standard specifications system to comply with global emission standards.
The discussion also addressed the Authority’s growing role in cooperation withthe International Organization for Standardization (ISO), within the framework of Egyptian efforts to consolidate its leadership position in the areas of quality and sustainability, especially after the selection of Dr. Khaled Sofi as president of the organization in a historic event that reflects the international community’s appreciation for Egyptian cadres and their technical expertise.

Environmental performance of industry

The discussion included a review of the efforts of theEnvironmental Performance Unit at the Egyptian General Authority for Standardization and Quality, which is the unit that is responsible for developing technical frameworks for measuring the environmental performance of industrial facilities, and following up on their commitment to approved standards.
This environmental performance enhances the Egyptian industry’s ability to enter European markets, which impose strict standards for carbon emissions. Thus, the horizon becomes broad for Egyptian exports, and this is what “Egypt Vision 2030” seeks.

The path towards green industry

Then the discussions emphasized the importance of the role played byCivil Society Organizations in supporting environmental transformation within the industrial sectors, where the model of theThe Earth Guards Foundation__EG_PH_88was reviewed, which focuses its efforts on achieving the goals of sustainable development and spreading awareness of its issues, through its social and economic dimensions, And environmental.

Towards a climate-friendly Egyptian industry

This dialogue session represented an opportunity to exchange experiences between the public and private sectors, and also an opportunity to clarify the role of specifications in achieving the ninth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to industry, innovation and infrastructure, as well as the thirteenth goal related to climate action.

The session emerged with a unified vision that confronting climate change requires close cooperation between the government, the private sector and civil society, and thatMeasuring the carbon footprint represents the starting point towards achieving a responsible and sustainable industry.
While the activities of the “Middle East and Africa Industry Exhibition” and the “Smart Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics Exhibition for the Middle East and Africa” continue; This dialogue remains a testament to Egypt’s commitment to achieving its national vision for sustainable transformation, and making Egyptian industry a symbol of quality, sustainability, and regional and local leadership.

Through its participation in this dialogue session,The Earth Guards Foundation confirms its effective national role in supporting government efforts to transition towards a sustainable economy, and promoting the culture ofmeasuring the carbon footprintin the productive and service sectors, which contributes to Consolidating all the principles and goals of sustainable development.
