Reviewing the Egyptian experience in developing health care at the Healthy Living Forum in Moscow

Health care systems around the world have witnessed rapid transformations in recent years, with increasing interest in moving from traditional treatment models to more comprehensive models that rely on prevention, early detection, and the use of modern technology in diagnosis and treatment. Developing health systems has become an essential element in enhancing countries’ ability to confront epidemiological challenges and improve public health indicators.

In this context, the Egyptian experience has emerged over the past years as a pioneering model for efforts to develop the health care system, through launching large-scale health initiatives, expanding early screening programmes, in addition to introducing precision medicine applications and digital technologies in the provision of health services, in a way that supports improving the quality of health care and enhancing disease prevention, in line with achieving comprehensive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

High-level dialogue session

Egypt is also keen to actively participate in global health forums and conferences. With the aim of learning about the latest developments and technologies in the health sector, exchanging experiences and enhancing cooperation with major countries and international organizations, in a way that enhances the ability of the Egyptian health system to keep pace with global developments and provide advanced health services to citizens.

In this context, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, participated in a high-level dialogue session in the presence of Dr. Mikhail Murashko, Russian Minister of Health, within the activities of the “Healthy Living” Forum held in the Russian Federation, where he reviewed the pioneering Egyptian experience in developing the health care system and improving public health indicators over the past three decades.

An integrated model based on prevention

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, explained that the Minister reviewed during the session the major transformation witnessed by the Egyptian health system, from a model that relies primarily on treatment after the disease occurs to an integrated model that focuses on prevention and early detection of diseases.

He also pointed to the health challenges facing Egypt at the turn of the millennium, such as the high rates of hepatitis virus infection and the spread of infectious and non-communicable diseases, which called on the state to launch a series of presidential initiatives under the slogan “100 Million Health.”

Egyptian Medical Innovation and Gold Level Certificate

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar added that the Minister of Health and Population touched on the advanced scientific initiatives launched by Egypt, the most prominent of which is the “Egyptian Genome” project and applications of precision medicine in treating rare diseases and tumors.

In addition to expanding the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in medical diagnosis and disease prediction, he stressed that these efforts culminated in Egypt obtaining the “Gold Level” certificate from the World Health Organization, becoming the first country in the world to achieve this achievement on the path to eliminating the hepatitis C virus.

Search joint cooperation files

On the sidelines of the forum, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, met with Dr. Mikhail Murashko, Russian Minister of Health, and the meeting reviewed aspects of existing health cooperation between Egypt and Russia, with a focus on opportunities to expand joint initiatives in priority sectors, which contributes to developing the health care system and exchanging experiences between the two countries.

The two ministers also discussed procedures for facilitating the registration of Russian medical products in Egypt and the possibility of their mutual recognition. With the aim of accelerating the availability of these products and enhancing cooperation in the pharmaceutical industries. Cooperation in combating viral diseases was discussed, including support for the joint production and distribution of treatments for hepatitis C and B and HIV AIDS.

Academic and Scientific Cooperation

With regard to the academic and scientific aspect, the two parties discussed the possibility of recognizing certificates and degrees issued by some Russian universities, and expanding specialized training programs in the fields of oncology, radiology and digital health, to support professional and academic development in Egypt.

The meeting also touched on supporting Egyptian efforts in providing treatment services to the displaced from the Gaza Strip, and providing some treatments and medical supplies, in addition to reviewing the draft memorandum of understanding proposed by the Russian side to provide a more effective and organized cooperation framework between the two countries in the health field.
