The BRT bus in Egypt...a qualitative shift in the transportation system

The frequency bus BRTIn Egypt.. a qualitative shift in the transportation system

Within the framework of the state’s plan to promote development and build sustainable cities, infrastructure development is one of the necessary foundations for achieving these goals. With the increasing social, economic and environmental challenges, countries' efforts are directed towards developing smart and sustainable transportation networks that contribute to improving the quality of life, achieving mobility justice, and supporting economic growth. Urban transportation forms an essential part of these efforts. Because it is one of the main components in developing sustainable cities and promoting urban development.

In this context, Egypt is witnessing a new phase of smart urban development, as it is moving with confident steps towards building a sustainable and advanced transportation system that integrates with the goals of sustainable development and achieves “Egypt Vision 2030.” The BRT bus project is one of the most prominent national projects that embody this transformation. It provides a modern, fast, and environmentally friendly means of electric transportation, and enhances connectivity between the regions of Greater Cairo.

Earth GuardsIn the following lines, the most prominent features of the project and its social, economic and environmental dimensions are reviewed, as it is a practical model for the transition towards smart and sustainable transportation systems, and evidence of the development of urban planning in Egypt in accordance with its climate commitments and the requirements of social justice. So keep reading.

The project extends 110 kilometers on the ring road around Greater Cairo, and includes 48 stations distributed over three operational phases, the first of which starts from the Police Academy station to the intersection of the Ring Road with the Alexandria Agricultural Road, with a length of 35 kilometers, and includes 14 stations that have been carefully equipped to receive passengers and operate 100 locally produced electric buses.

The reciprocating bus is characterized by the fact that it runs on electricity and moves on paths completely isolated from traffic. This reduces transportation time and contributes to reducing emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels. The time interval between each bus and the next will be about three minutes in normal conditions, and only a minute and a half during peak times, equivalent to 20 buses per hour, a performance that rivals the metro in terms of efficiency and smoothness.

Dimensions of the frequency bus project

This project represents a practical alternative to the traditional microbus that has always caused traffic congestion and environmental pollution, and it also paves the way for the restructuring of the mass transportation system inGreater Cairo. The frequency bus stations are scheduled to be integrated with other means of transportation, such as the metro on the first line, and the light electric train (LRT) at Adly Mansour station, in addition to the service and superjet stops. Which contributes to building an interconnected urban transportation network that keeps pace with international standards and meets the needs of citizens.

In terms of the environmental dimension, the project relies entirely on electrical energy, and includes the establishment of four main bus charging stations, two of which are at the beginning of the lines and two at the end. This contributes to ensuring the continuity of bus operation throughout the day. In addition, the government is working to create parking lots for private cars below the frequent bus stations, which allows citizens to move easily and flexibly between different means of transportation.

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

In addition to the environmental and regulatory advantages the project offers, the flexibility of ticket pricing comes as a step in support of social justice. The ticket price is calculated based on the number of stops the passenger travels; This will contribute to making the service available to all segments of society, and encourage its use instead of private cars and informal means of transportation. This reduces congestion and emissions.

When looking at the bigger picture, it becomes clear that the frequency bus project is not just a development in transportation, but rather a real turning point towards building smart and sustainable cities that respond to the challenges of climate and urban growth and achieve justice in mobility. It represents one of the practical models for implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the ground - especially Goal No. (11) sustainable cities and communities - and combines environmental considerations through the use of clean energy, social considerations through providing affordable service, and economic considerations in terms of reducing the cost of operation and implementation compared to other alternatives.

The frequency bus project also contributes to achieving goal (9) “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.” This reflects the growing role of the Egyptian state in adopting green and smart solutions in the transportation sector, at a time when major cities are in dire need of effective transportation networks that support urban growth and reduce carbon emissions.

From this standpoint, Earth Guards affirms its commitment to its role in supporting these development projects, which contribute to improving the quality of life of citizens, based on its belief that switching to sustainable transportation systems is not a luxury, but rather an urgent necessity imposed by the challenges of reality, and an essential foundation for building safer, more resilient cities and the ability to contain changes.
