What is Governance?

In the modern era, we see manifestations of urbanization and urbanization in many areas. From here comes the term governance, which is derived from the Greek verb (κυβερνάω, kubernáo), meaning: guidance. However, it was used in English to mean ruling the state, or ruling the world, and then it was linked to the concept of institutional structures and how to manage them.

However, the term governance – in its broader current meaning – includes the activities of public and private institutions. It became more and more popular in the early 1990s; It became part of the dictionary of economics and political science, and after that it became known within the scope of work of the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank.

Governance is a set of principles or a set of rules and practices through which we can manage and organize institutions, as governance seeks to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of those institutions, and to achievethe public interestin a quality manner and competitive advantages, whether in the field of government or private business.

Governance – in short – is following a specific system to control the relationships between the main parties that affect the performance of organizations. Which helps organize work and define responsibilities. In order to achieve administrative goals in the long term.

As for the application areas of governance, they are numerous. It can be applied in government institutions and companies, as it ensures administrative transparency for this broad sector, pays attention to the principles of social responsibility, and applies the rule of law. In companies – specifically – governance seeks to protect the rights of partners, shareholders, customers and employees alike, and also seeks to achieve production goals, while ensuringgood management of resources.

Governance has several basic elements, all of which revolve around access to information. This information access is part of what is called transparency. That is, the transparency of the governance system. Other elements include: responsibility for employees’ actions before stakeholders.

Governance is also concerned with the rule of law and its implementation for everyone without discrimination. Therefore, economic growth can be enhanced, because governance helps provide an attractive investment environment.Sustainable developmentis not the closest goal of governance, but the environment is also one of its basic goals, as it ensures that we use natural resources in a sustainable manner.

But, what are the most prominent governance challenges? Governance, like any system, faces obstacles and problems. Among the most severe obstacles to activating governance systems in institutions and companies are:

  • Corruption: Corruption represents an extremely dangerous challenge to empowering governance principles! As we said: The most important element of governance is integrity, which works to achieve social justice.
  • Weakness of institutions: This weakness indicates defects in the structures of institutions and poor methods of operating them. This may be due to a lack of transparency – we said previously: it is an important element of governance – when institutions lack effective transparency and accountability systems, it becomes difficult for institutions and companies to evaluate administrative performance.

Based on the above, governance is a part of great importance in the institution’s cultural and administrative system, as the institution must operate with integrity, transparency, and credibility. In conclusion, it can be said: Governance is a crucial element in the journey of success and continuity of institutions and companies. When an organization follows governance principles and practices, it can achieve its goals and even achieve sustainable success. Therefore, all institutions mustadhere to the principles of governance, and fulfill their legal and ethical obligations, to ensure their success, and then we will have achieved an important goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
