Definition of the initiative and its objectives
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research launched the “Empowerment” initiative last October 27, in cooperation with the “Givers of Hope” global campaign, which aims to integrate students with disabilities into Egyptian universities. This initiative works to achieve equality of opportunities and enable students to exercise their academic and social rights.
The “Empowerment” initiative also focuses on providing logistical and psychological support that helps people of determination achieve their full potential. It also seeks to enhance cooperation among all students in a comprehensive educational environment. Which supports diversity and enhances the values of teamwork and creativity, all of which achieves the goals of sustainable development.
The path to sustainable development
The objectives of the “Tamkeen” initiative are linked to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal (4) concerned with the quality of comprehensive education: quality education, and Goal (10) which focuses on reducing gaps within societies: reducing inequalities. This is done by providing integrated support services. With these services, the initiative contributes to achieving a balanced educational environment qualified to stimulate innovation and creativity. This reflects Egypt’s commitment to achieving its comprehensive development vision, aiming to empower everyone without discrimination.
Initiative Timeline
The first phase of the initiative began on October 27 from within Cairo University, and its journey continued across seven geographical regions, where awareness and educational events were held in each region through workshops and sports and artistic activities, until the first phase concluded on December 10 in the city of Luxor.
Support and Achievements
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has established 20 centers to serve students with disabilities in public universities – with plans to expand this number – as these centers provide comprehensive support through psychological, functional and technological rehabilitation. The Ministry has also established international partnerships to enhance this support, enabling students with disabilities to participate effectively in the academic and economic fields.
