Home health care in Egypt…a qualitative transformation towards a comprehensive, sustainable system

Egypt is moving rapidly towards rebuilding its health system on more comprehensive and sustainable foundations, benefiting from global transformations that place human health at the heart of sustainable development plans. With the increasing need for flexible care models that take into account resource efficiency and preserve quality of life, the trend towardhome health care is emerging as one of the strategic paths to building a health system capable of responding to the requirements of sustainable development, in line with Goal (3) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to good health and well-being.

In this context, in July 2025, the General Health Care Authority officially launched the “Caring for You at Home” project. To constitute a turning point in the way health services are provided, as it aims to transfer medical care from the traditional framework of hospitals to the patient’s environment itself. This transformation establishes a new philosophy that sees access to health services as a basic right that must transcend spatial and bureaucratic restrictions.

Comprehensive services that support quality of life

The “Your Home Care Project” provides a wide range of services, including family medicine services, nursing, physical therapy, and care for the elderly and those with chronic diseases, with a plan to add psychological and post-surgical care services, and it relies on qualified medical teams working according to precise protocols that ensure quality and safety within the patient’s environment.

This model is not limited to providing medical service within homes, but rather restructures the way care is provided to become more integrated with the needs of society. By reducing the burden on hospitals and reducing long-stay rates, the “Your Care at Home” project contributes to redistributing health resources more efficiently and allows directing capabilities towards critical cases and teaching hospitals.

Integrating home care services into the health system works to provide a direct link between preventive and curative medicine, which improves the quality of life, and is a step towards health policies that are compatible with the concept of sustainable development.

Flexible access and mobile model of care

To expand the scope of the service, the authority relied on “Home Care Cars” equipped with the latest medical equipment to provide a quick and flexible response, with initial coverage of the governorates of Port Said and Ismailia within the comprehensive health insurance system, and a plan for gradual expansion in the rest of the governorates.

Home health care teams succeeded in implementing more than 2,000 visits during the pilot phase, with a commitment to visit cases within 48 hours of the request, and on the same day for emergency cases. These numbers reflect a tangible shift towards a health model that places ease of access and rapid response at the core of its priorities.

A strategic dimension that goes beyond medical service

The “Your Care at Home” program represents part of a comprehensive restructuring of the Egyptian health sector towards building a more flexible and sustainable system. With the integration of the project into the comprehensive health insurance system, it becomes a basis for developing long-term health policies that link resource efficiency and fair service distribution. This strategic dimension gives the project greater value than being a new service. To become a pillar in building a health infrastructure that supports community stability and growth.

In addition to this strategic dimension, the project reflects a shift in thinking towards activating the role of health care in community development. Adopting the home care model opens the way for redesigning health services so that they are integrated within the social and economic fabric, which contributes to building a more comprehensive system capable of facing the increasing pressures on resources, and from here a ground is formed that paves the way for expanding the application of this model and linking it to a sustainable health vision that goes beyond the boundaries of traditional medical service.

In this context, this project constitutes – what theThe Earth Guards Foundation believes – a link between health and sustainable development, as it reformulates the concept of medical care to become more comprehensive; Home health care reduces the burden on hospital infrastructure, and also contributes to reducing emissions resulting from transportation and reducing resource consumption, which makes it part of the transition towards sustainable health systems.

Through this project, Egypt confirms that investing in health is an investment in humans, and this opens the door to future visions that include integrating digital technology, remote monitoring systems, and analyzing health data to develop an integrated model of smart care. Such steps can make the Egyptian experience a regional reference in building resilient health systems capable of facing challenges.
