Egypt is striving to achieve comprehensive, sustainable development in all fields and at all levels, both locally and internationally. It participated in the first summits of leaders of the International Alliance to Combat Poverty and Hunger, co-chaired by Brazil and Spain. The summit also comes within the program of the Second World Summit for Social Development, and international leaders and officials began arriving in the Qatari capital, Doha, on Sunday evening to participate in the activities of the Social Development Summit.

First Summit of Leaders of the Global Alliance Against Poverty and Hunger

In a world where good things exist – and where resources should be enough for everyone – it is entirely possible to ensure that everyone, everywhere has enough to eat”; This is how Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly, began her speech at the first summit of the Alliance Against Poverty and Hunger.

She concluded her speech by saying: “A world free of poverty and hunger is not an unattainable aspiration. It is within our reach, if we work together to achieve it.”

In recognition of the magnitude of the challenges posed by poverty and hunger in the midst of the multiple crises that the world is experiencing, and within the framework of international efforts made to combat poverty and hunger, the work of the first summit of the leaders of the Global Alliance was launched in the Qatari capital, Doha, as poverty and hunger are among the most pressing international challenges in the current era, especially withhigh population growthand the scarcity of available resources, and the coalition includes more than 100 countries and organizations. A regional, international agency, and civil society group, and the meeting on Monday, November 3, was its first at the leadership level, and aims to accelerate practical cooperation, from expanding social protection to promoting climate-resilient agriculture.

The first summit resulted in the Copenhagen Program of Action, an ambitious promise that makes the human being a fundamental focus of comprehensive development. Through ten basic commitments, world leaders pledged to eradicate poverty and hunger, and build comprehensive, just, and resilient societies. These commitments are a vision for the twenty-first century, based on dignity, equality, and shared prosperity.

Egypt’s participation in the Second World Summit for Social Development confirms the importance it attaches to achieving comprehensive and sustainable social development, supporting international efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger, and moving forward to a more comprehensive and prosperous future for all.

D. Madbouly reviews Egyptian efforts to achieve sustainable development

In his speech delivered by Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly on behalf of His Excellency President Sisi, he stressed that poverty and hunger intersect with other structural challenges such as high levels of debt and a decline in official development aid. He also called for urgent reform of the global financial structure and strengthening international economic governance to confront those challenges.

Madbouly warned that food insecurity has affected more than two billion people around the world to varying degrees, in addition to the fact that one in every five people in Africa suffers from hunger every day. He also expressed Egypt’s appreciation for the distinguished efforts made by Spain and Brazil in their joint presidency of the Global Alliance to Combat Poverty and Hunger, stressing that these two challenges require international cooperation and an integrated approach.

In the same context, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly reviewed the Egyptian efforts made to combat poverty and hunger, represented by the “Solidarity and Dignity” program, which succeeded in reaching more than 7 million Egyptian families and providing them with financial support, which contributes to alleviating poverty and raising the standard of living, in addition to the “Decent Life” project, which he described as the most ambitious initiative to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development, especially in rural areas, as it targets more than 60 million people in various governorates. Republic, stressing that these initiatives reflect Egypt’s firm commitment to achieving sustainable development that is consistent with the goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030.

His Excellency also indicated the implementation of a national project for silos to increase the storage capacity of wheat and grains to provide strategic stock to secure the country’s needs. The project aims to provide new storage spaces amounting to one and a half million tons through the establishment of approximately 50 silos in 17 governorates, as well as cooperation with the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to build a global grain storage center in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
