In order to combat all obstacles that prevent countries from achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in all fields; Hence the global summit “Future Summit 2024” attempts to chart a course of action for sustainable development in a global manner that opens up future horizons for us.
The Future Summit 2024, which began its first session the day before yesterday – Sunday – is a high-level annual meeting. It is a summit held by theUnited Nations General Assembly, where world leaders and people look to it with a look of hope for a bright tomorrow. With this summit, everyone is trying to revitalize common principles and pave the way to a more sustainable and resilient global future.
Broad peak
In the past two days, the 2024 Future Summit relied on representatives of the world’s youth, along with UN officials and heads of government, in addition to those concerned with global affairs; Aiming to enable digital technologies, so that the future of planet Earth is more sustainable, and exploring the trends, dangers, and opportunities presented by digital technologies in order to enhance the role of digital transformation in a sustainable manner.
The opening session of the 2024 Future Summit included speeches by the President of the General Assembly and the Secretary-General of the United Nations. In these words, the “Charter for the Future” was announced, which includes the International Digital Charter and the Declaration of Future Generations. It is a global charter that includes chapters on sustainable development and financing for development, so this version of the Future Summit is the broadest international agreement in many years. Because the digital charter that was announced covers new areas that the summit had not previously encountered, in addition to issues that could not have been agreed upon decades ago.
The axes of the Future Charter aim – in general – to ensure that international institutions are capable of changing the world and stimulating development work in all fields, and this is based on all concepts of digital transformation, and in view of the standards of urbanization and development, which is what the Secretary-General of the United Nations confirmed in his speech in which he said: “We cannot shape the future of our grandchildren with a system built by it.” Our ancestors”.
The charter focuses in detail on five areas: They are: sustainable development, international peace and security, science and technology, youth and future generations, and global governance. The latter is a vital field that can work to overcome the obstacles that stand between multilateral institutions and development goals, especially the obstacles that have emerged in the twenty-first century.
Based on these five areas, the member states of the United Nations pledged to promote Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and work to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, and this – of course – with the transition away from fossil fuels in a fair and equitable manner. The participants of the Future Summit 2024 also stressed the importance of listening to young people, and the importance of involving them in decision-making at the national and global levels. So that the pace of implementation of these pledges will accelerate.
The pledges also stressed the need to build stronger partnerships with civil society and the private sector, along with governments, as well as redoubling efforts to sustain local communities, address all effects of climate change, and combat them in a manner consistent with national systems, especially in developing countries that have been more affected than others by the increasing climate challenges.
Crossroads
At the 2024 Future Summit, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Philemon Yang, delivered an important speech following the adoption of the Future Charter, in which he stressed that the world stands at a crossroads, and this requires making decisive decisions. In order to confront global challenges, such as climate change and the digital divide between many countries.
Philimon Yang pointed out that the summit is not only to address current crises, but also to lay the foundations of a sustainable and just global system for all now and in the future. He also pointed out the role of youth – especially in Africa – in carrying the torch of the future. Stressing that every country must have a place at the global dialogue table, regardless of its size or wealth.
For his part, the Secretary-General of the United Nations – Antonio Guterres – spoke about the difficult times that the world is going through; Emphasizing the need to modernize international cooperation; To become more fair and inclusive. He added that what was decided by the 2024 Future Summit – the Future Charter, the Global Digital Charter, and the Declaration of Future Generations – opens new horizons for peace, security and sustainable development. Guterres stressed that these agreements constitute significant progress towards reforming the international system at all levels.
In conclusion, the Future Summit 2024 is an important station to support global action in the fields of governance and digitalization, in order to achieve the goals of sustainable development for all. Based on the Charter for the Future, which will put technological solutions into practice, the Digital Charter, which is a comprehensive global framework for addressing digital gaps at the level of data and innovation, and the Declaration of Future Generations, which will work to consolidate long-term ideas that will discuss the future of future generations.
