Green City
On the land of Kenana, Egyptians are racing against time in preparation for hosting theClimate Conference, intensive meetings held by officials, experts, media, and civil society, to welcome the largest event in the history of the city of Sharm El-Sheikh, where more than 130 countries participate in this summit, in the presence of kings and presidents of the world.
Here on the land of Egypt, in Sharm El-Sheikh, everyone is working hard and efficiently, so that Egypt appears in its most beautiful form, and the city of “Peace” is decorated with its most beautiful and finest clothes, where everyone will meet to discuss previous pledges and the current agenda, to come up with recommendations and decisions that protect the planet from a dangerous future.
But the pledges and decisions of an international nature, which the participants aspire to declare to protect the environment, are accompanied by local measures, which the Egyptian government has pledged to implement in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh, with the aim of transforming it into a “green city” on several levels, through 27 projects, the implementation of which has been completed, turning Sharm El-Sheikh into a green city, in a new development that has not happened in its history, to become A role model, and an opportunity for the countries participating in the summit to witness Egypt’s ability and efforts in transitioning to the green system.
A few days ago, Egypt had concluded a document called “Sharm El Sheikh Green City Project,” funded by international environmental organizations, at an estimated cost of $7 million, to transform the city into an environmentally sustainable destination and adopt more low-carbon technologies and good waste management practices.
These projects that turned Sharm El Sheikh into a green city include:
Establishing electric power stations powered by solar energy in the city and tourist hotels, and converting cars to run on natural gas.
The initiative included 8 gas stations running on natural gas, all of which were equipped with electric chargers for charging cars, with all other cars in the city being converted to run on gas, as all projects being implemented in Sharm El Sheikh are considered environmentally friendly, and a major step in which the dream of a green city was completed.
Al-Salam Road also witnessed expansion works on the road, adding three to five traffic lanes, a bicycle path, a pedestrian path, beautification and lighting works, green spaces, and flower beds. The works also include a 6 km long tourist walkway, and the walkway consists of 82 shops, in addition to the entertainment area that includes a waterfall, an amphitheater, a panorama restaurant, and a games area. Children, and service shops, and the Flag Square Square was established on Peace Road, in front of the Peace Icon, as well as works to disseminate the visual identity in Sharm El-Sheikh.
The projects also include the establishment of the first and largest smart park located on an area of 110,000 square metres, all roads were developed and expanded, green areas were increased, and the governorate completed the establishment of a charging station specialized in electricity on an area of 100,000 square metres.
On its way to greenness, the streets of Sharm El-Sheikh, which are adjacent to seven natural reserves, which are included in the South Sinai Governorate, have prepared with a number of high-quality environmental measures. The city has also received a transport fleet that includes approximately 400 electric cars and buses, and others that operate on natural gas, and they will all be operated during and after the climate conference.
The statements of Egyptian officials confirm that all the environmental endeavors and achievements that took place in the city were not and will not be a “celebration trend” that the state established on the occasion of the conference of an international nature being held on the territory of Egypt, but rather they are steps on the path to sustainability in all of Egypt, and the Prime Minister, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, had inspected at the beginning of this month permanent electric charging stations in the city, some of which can charge 140 batteries. A bus, in reference to the sustainability of the trend.
In this way, Egypt presents a realistic model to the world, with the possibilityof confronting the effects of climate change, which can be repeated and built upon by modernizing the city of Sharm El-Sheikh, providing it with electric transportation, helping hotels obtain the green star, spreading the work of solar energy units inside hotels, and changing the waste management system.

Given that tourism is a major source of income for Sharm El-Sheikh, the sector has received a share of the environmentally friendly green color, as the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced that it is working seriously to assist hotel and tourist establishments and diving centers located therein in obtaining the “Green Mark” certificate from the relevant international bodies.
