Giving up fossil fuels with a historic agreement

Today – Wednesday – the work of the climate conference continues in the Emirates. To discuss the issue of exiting from fossil fuels, as the parties ofCOP28 seek to activate a historic agreement on the transition to new and renewable energy, and this within the current decade.

This extension comes in light of controversy over the fate of the global transition away from fossil fuels, represented byoil, gas and coal, which many countries have called for; In order to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with the principles of the Paris Agreement, taking into account scientific recommendations in this regard.

Regarding this, the President of the Twenty-Eighth Conference of the Parties (COP) said: “It is a historic decision to accelerate climate action.” Dr. Sultan Al Jaber added: “We drafted the final agreement in an objective manner regarding the exit from fossil fuels.”

This, the draft agreement addressed – for the first time in the history of climate conferences – all types of fossil fuels responsible for climate change. In this agreement, the international community sent a message to owners of investment projects and policy makers: It says that the world now wants to dispense with fossil fuels, as this transformation is the last wall in front of potentialenvironmental disasters.

But, although most countries agreed this morning – December 13 – to this decision, some countries rejected the decision to dispense with oil, gas and coal. Among them: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq.

In this regard, French Minister of Energy Transition, Agnes Pannier-Ronache, confirmed that the agreement to exit fossil fuels at COP28 is a victory for climate diplomacy. She also stated that the text of the agreement calls for the gradual abandonment of fossil fuels, in accordance with the goal: stopping global climate warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius, which is the goal formulated by theParis Agreement in 2015.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the United Nations – António Guterres, commented, saying: “The era of fossil fuels has passed.” Earlier yesterday evening – Tuesday – the US climate envoy – John Kerry – confirmed the extent of progress made inCOP28 on fossil fuels.

It is worth noting that the States Parties have so far only achieved the goal of “reducing coal use.” This is the goal that the world called for at the Twenty-Sixth Conference of the Parties (COP) in Glasgow, and there the states parties did not address the issue of oil or gas.

Hence, the new agreement in the Emirates recognizes the role of transitional energy, in reference to gas. The agreement also includes doubling the capacity ofclean energy three times, as well as doubling the pace of energy efficiency development twice by 2030, and supporting technological technologies specialized in reducing carbon emissions, such ascarbon capture technology And store it.

For all this,Earth Guards takes into account the calls for COP27 and the decisions of COP28, considering that these two conferences are an important opportunity to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, and to achieve concrete steps on the ground with regard to the environment and its resources; So that our world is a sustainable world.
