Launching of the National Midwifery Program

At the beginning of this week, the Ministry of Health and Population launched the National Midwifery Program in Egypt, under the umbrella of the presidential initiative “The 1,000 Golden Days for Family Development,” in cooperation with the World Health Organization, the United Nations Population Fund, and the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The program was launched in the presence of Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, “Minister of Health and Population,” who stressed that the Egyptian state places maternal and child health at the top of its health and development priorities, through an integrated system that begins with pre-pregnancy care, and extends during pregnancy and childbirth until the first years of the child’s life, supported by primary health care, referral systems, and digital transformation.

Improving the quality of health services

Regarding this national program – the National Midwifery Program – Dr. Ahmed Taha, “President of the General Authority for Health Accreditation and Control”, indicated that the launch of the National Midwifery Program in Egypt is a qualitative step that supports the state’s efforts to improve the quality of health care services provided to mothers and children, and consolidates the application of modern health care models based on efficiency, quality and sustainability.

Dr. Ahmed Taha congratulated the Ministry of Health and Population and the national and international bodies involved in preparing and launching the program, explaining that qualifying midwives in accordance with approved professional standards contributes greatly to enhancing the quality of health care and patient safety, and also supports national efforts aimed at improving health indicators and reducing maternal and newborn mortality rates.

What is the role of the Health Supervision Authority?

In line with the above, Dr. Ahmed Taha noted that the new program is consistent with the directions ofthe General Authority for Health Accreditation and Control towards supporting safe and effective health care systems centered on the needs of beneficiaries, stressing that building qualified health cadres is one of the basic pillars of achieving quality, and ensuring the provision of health services that are consistent with best international practices and standards.

Then the head of the General Authority for Health Accreditation and Control pointed out that developing midwifery services is an important focus within the system of improving maternal and child health services, drawing attention to the approaching date when the authority will launch specialized quality standards for health facilities friendly to mothers and children. In order to provide a safe care environment during pregnancy, childbirth and beyond, and to contribute to improving the experience of those dealing with the health service, and raising the efficiency of health outcomes.

Dr. Ahmed Taha also revealed that the General Authority for Health Accreditation and Supervision is continuing its efforts to prepare specialized national standards for nursing care, in cooperation with an elite group of experts and specialists, in a way that enhances the development of professional practices in the fields of nursing and midwifery, and in a way that also establishes a culture of quality and patient safety at various levels of health care provision within Egypt.
