Egypt is hosting this session of the World Climate ConferenceCOP27At a very delicate and complex time, as the global economy has not yet recovered from the effects of the Corona pandemic, in addition to the continuation of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the rise in tensions between Russia and the West, and the global food crisis it has caused. And international disputes, which places great challenges on the shoulders of the organizing state in trying to bring together the word of these parties, to work seriously for the benefit of planet Earth and the future of the world.

At the same time, the conference will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, after the states parties to the agreement succeeded during the “Glasgow” conference in the United Kingdom in 2021 in concluding an agreement to implement the recommendations of the “Paris” conference, achieving the international will to reduce harmful emissions, and maintaining the rate of increase in temperatures at one and a half degrees. Celsius.

 Despite these international efforts, the decisions of the previous summits remain mere pledges that need to be implemented, so Egypt realized that the time had come to immediately move from the stage of negotiation and discussion of mechanisms of action, to the stage of actual implementation on the ground of all the outcomes of the previous summits, whether related to reducing emissions (mitigation), adaptation, or Financing.

Rights of Developing Countries

Egypt also comes to the COP27 summit, carrying the concerns of the African continent, to present them to the member states of the climate conference, where everyone knows that developing countries are the most vulnerable to the harmful effects of climate change, such as floods, drought, and forest fires.

Therefore, Egypt has placed the demands of these countries at the top of the COP27 topics, and meeting the needs of these countries will be a focal point on the conference’s agenda.

These countries view themselves as victims of climate change, since they contribute very modestly to greenhouse gas emissions. These countries ask rich countries to fulfill their pledges to provide $100 billion annually to help them adapt to climate change. They also demand that major countries acknowledge the damage and losses they have been exposed to, from As a result of these changes, such as the effects of rising sea levels or recurring floods.

Egypt, in cooperation with those countries, submitted a number of demands to the summit’s agenda, most notably raising the ceiling of global ambition and increasing financial allocations to fight climate change, which these countries consider essential for survival.

In addition, Egypt is in the process of undertaking a number of initiatives of a practical nature, to deal with various aspects of the issue, including global and regional initiatives, through which Egypt seeks to make a tangible difference in various areas of climate action. In this context, the Egyptian state launched seven initiatives of interest to the African continent as main topics of discussion in this session of COP27, which is:

The first initiative: targets a fair energy transition, includes African countries, and ensures accelerating the energy transition in a fair and equitable manner.

The second initiative: focuses on providing a decent life for African people, by countering the effects of climate change.

The third initiative: on supporting women, and aims to enhance women’s capabilities towards a more flexible environment, and provide more green job opportunities.

The fourth initiative: in the field of agriculture and food provision, and aims to consider agricultural practices and food systems in Africa and food security.

The fifth initiative: is concerned with water, and aims to establish an early warning system for water problems and protect water from the impact of climate change.

The sixth initiative: in the field of diversity and concerned with protecting marine life and the ecosystem.

The seventh and final initiative: to expand waste recycling on the African continent, as this initiative aims to deal with all types of waste, in sound ways that are not harmful to the environment.

Egypt’s efforts to combat climate change

Although Egypt’s emissions of harmful waste do not exceed 0.6% of the world’s total emissions, Egypt is considered one of the countries in the world most exposed to the negative effects of climate change in many sectors, such as beaches, agriculture, water resources, health and population, and infrastructure.

Egypt is making great efforts to resist the effects of these changes, and to anticipate their occurrence, through Egypt’s Vision 2030, which attaches special importance to confronting the effects of these changes, through the presence of an integrated and sustainable environmental system that enhances the ability to confront these risks.

With regard to Egypt’s contribution to efforts to reduce emissions, Egypt has taken many serious and effective steps, such as developing a comprehensive strategy to reduce emissions until 2030, which is being updated until 2050, in addition to developing a sustainable energy strategy for Egypt 2035, which aims to increase The contribution of renewable energy to generating electricity, improving energy efficiency, and implementing many renewable energy projects, such as wind energy projects and solar energy projects, and future planning for Egypt to become a regional center for clean energy.

Egypt’s gains from hosting COP27

  1. As for the gains that Egypt achieves from hosting COP27, they are many and varied, including:
    Economically, the conference will contribute to promoting tourism in Egypt, and this will attract local and international investments in the field of tourism and hospitality, and the projects that connect with them.
  2. The conference will also work to promote Egyptian industry and products, and traditional crafts and industries, which will be presented on the sidelines of the conference.
  3. At the political level, the conference will be used to present Egyptian policy priorities and important strategic issues that serve the Egyptian state, most notably water security issues, and Egyptian positions on regional issues.
  4. The conference will strengthen Egypt’s relationship with some key partners, work to expand areas of joint cooperation, and confirm Egypt’s weight and its ability to host and manage international conferences.
  5. The conference sessions will provide the opportunity to conclude partnerships in the environmental fields, in addition to providing sources of funding from international organizations for projects to combat climate change in Egypt.
  6. By following the conference and its media coverage, Egypt will receive a wide and intense spotlight on it, and on its role, policies and national projects, by the international media.
