International workshop on the food-water-energy-sustainability nexus sponsored by the The Earth Guards Foundation
Hama El-Earth continues its role in achieving the goals of sustainable development and spreading awareness of all related issues locally and globally, a role that the Foundation plays in line with “Egypt Vision 2030” and unifying the Egyptian efforts that work to make the lives of Egyptians more sustainable, and in a way that meets the needs of future generations.
Therefore, the The Earth Guards Foundation spares no effort to promote all the actual steps in achieving comprehensive sustainability goals, and today it continues those efforts, and continues to spread its awareness message by sponsoring an international workshop on the interconnection of food, water, energy, and sustainability, which is a workshop organized byAcademy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT). This was in a high-level presence, and one of the most prominent attendees was Dr. Islam Abu Al-Majd, “Head of the Remote Sensing Authority.”
Overall Sustainability
This international workshop comes at a time when the world is in need of many efforts that deepen the work of sustainable development in all countries of the world, through the objective interconnection between all inputs to development work, as the comprehensive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are interconnected, and based on comprehensive diversity, which targets all sectors, and addresses everything that limits the sustainability of the health of the planet Earth and the peoples who live on it.
Accordingly, the workshop was held this morning – February 20 – and will continue until tomorrow evening, after the organizing committee for this event received the participating delegations. In preparation for the sessions that the workshop will hold; In order to discuss all sustainability challenges around the world.
With the aim of promoting sustainable development work in a comprehensive and interconnected manner between food, water and energy issues, the welcoming speech on the first day of the workshop was delivered by Professor Reham Sabry, Director of the International Scientific Relations Department at the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology.
After that, the opening speech was given by Dr. Ibrahim Hassan, “Chairman of the Egyptian Scientific Committee for Environmental Problems (ESCOPE) at Alexandria University. Then there was a speech by Dr. Gina El-Feki – via video conference technology – “President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, and Vice-President of the Science and Technology Center for Non-Aligned Countries (NAM S&T Center).” From the international delegation, Dr. Amitaba Bandopadhyay spoke, “Director General of the Center for Science and Technology for Non-Aligned and Developing Countries.”
Beginning from the Global South
The workshop activities began with a session that focused on the extent of the interconnection between food, water and energy issues in the Global South, and how the problems that could prevent the achievement of comprehensive transformation efforts in sustainable development work can be solved.
In this session, which was chaired by Dr. Dipankar Sah – Professor at the Manav Rachna International Research and Studies Institute, Suman Bala University, Faridabad – a number of Egyptian and international experts spoke about the interconnection of food, water, energy and sustainability in the Arab region, and the impact of climate and its changes on this interconnection. They also discussed – the extent of the impact of the recent floods on the agricultural sector in many countries.
Then the session was concluded with an intervention by Dr. Noha Samir Donia, “Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Environmental Research at Ain Shams University,” in which she discussed the relationship between the interconnection of food, water, and energy and the extent of the impact of climate change on Egyptian development rates.
Sustainable Water Resources Management
In the second session, the discussions were titled: “Enhancing Water Security: Challenges and Solutions for Integrated Water Resources Management,” where speakers discussed ways to optimally use groundwater. In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to clean water and sanitation.
The session discussions also touched on the hydraulic challenges and costs associated with supplying drinking water to the new Indonesian capital, as a model of sustainable transformation. Discussions included talk about ozone sterilization technology to reuse treated wastewater, in addition to shedding light on how to create nature-based solutions. To achieve sustainable development.
Food Security and Pollution
At the end of the day, the third session was held to discuss the issues offood securityand the food industry in light of the effects of global climate change. In this session, experts discussed innovative tools and applications that can contribute to achieving sustainable food security.
A scientific analysis was presented on global food contamination, and a review of European notifications on food safety over the past two decades. Then the session concluded with an opening for discussion and questions, where attendees were given the opportunity to inquire about the issues raised on the first day of the workshop.
How to achieve urban sustainability
Tomorrow – February 21 – the first session will be about proposing solutions to the problems of the interconnection of food, water and energy issues, and discussing the extent to which this interconnection can achieve urban sustainability. Attendees will discuss the most prominent solutions in this field, such as integrating the principles of the water-energy-food nexus into landscape architecture, especially in developing countries, as well as exploiting wasted algae to achieve the water-food-energy nexus. Which confirms the necessity of shifting from the traditional economy to a sustainable green economy.
Strategies for interconnections between sustainability issues
In a session entitled: “Developing policies and strategies for the food-water-energy nexus,” Dr. Mohamed Al-Khayyat – Chairman of the New and Renewable Energy Authority – will speak about the future opportunities and expectations for renewable energy in Egypt. Participants in this session will also talk about the importance of the “MOF” technology, as it is one of the most important innovations that preserve the environment and its resources. Opportunities related to hydroelectric energy will also be discussed, especially in the fields of energy. And irrigation.
In conclusion, the topics of this workshop on its first day were full of serious discussions, and the upcoming sessions will shed more light on ways to promote Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and how to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan; So that no one is left behind.
