The Arab Common Electricity Market…a historic step towards Arab integration in the field of energy
In a pivotal step that embodies the depth of Arab cooperation in the field of electric energy, theLeague of Arab States launched the Arab Joint Electricity Market in the New Administrative Capital, during the fifteenth session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity.
The event – which was described as historic – was attended by electricity and energy ministers from several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, Tunisia, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt, as it constituted a starting point towards achieving Arab integration in the electricity sector.
The strategic importance of the Arab Common Market
The launch of the Arab Common Electricity Market is not just a regional agreement, but rather a strategic project that opens broad horizons for cooperation and development in the Arab world. It was signed by 12 Arab countries: the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, and Morocco.
The primary goal of this project is to enhance the stability of electricity supply, reduce costs, support renewable energy investments, and consolidate the position of Arab countries in the global market as a promising market for exporting clean energy in the future.
In this context, Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki – Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Affairs Sector at the League of Arab States – confirmed that this market represents a qualitative leap in the process of joint Arab action.
The ambassador indicated that signing the agreement is a platform for achievingsustainable developmentand economic integration among Arab countries. This reflects a clear commitment to achieving a comprehensive economic vision, based on benefiting from renewable resources and enhancing energy sustainability.
The project’s technical and technical foundations
The process of preparing for the Arab Common Electricity Market required years of intensive technical work, as teams of experts and specialists established the project on an infrastructure, technical and legal basis, and electrical interconnection systems were developed between the participating countries. This enhances the ability to exchange energy according to supply and demand.
This project will, in addition, provide a framework for cooperation on building renewable energy projects, such as solar energy and wind energy. Which will lead to reducing dependence on traditional energy sources and promoting sustainable development.
Economic integration and promotion of sustainable development
The common market is not only a platform for enhancing electrical cooperation, but also a tool for achieving Arab economic integration. It is expected to contribute to supporting the economies of participating countries by reducing energy production costs and providing new investment opportunities.
The project also encourages increasing the share of renewable energy in the energy mix. This is consistent with global goals to combat climate change and enhance environmental sustainability. Cooperation in the field of electricity will also improve the efficiency of using the shared natural resources of the Arab countries, and provides an opportunity to improve the energy infrastructure on a regional scale. Which serves the economic and social development of the peoples of the region.
Honoring and praising the efforts
In the opening session, the efforts made to achieve this achievement were praised, and a number of personalities and institutions were honored that played a major role in laying the foundations of the project and its implementation. Participants also praised the technical competencies that contributed to setting the vision of the common market and formulating its legal and technical structure.
A unified vision for the future
This project reflects a joint Arab vision towards enhancing cooperation in the field of energy, and paves the way for achieving optimal use of electricity production capabilities in Arab countries. It is expected that the Arab Common Electricity Market will contribute to achieving a balance between supply and demand, and improving the competitive advantages of countries participating in the international energy market. In light of the increasing global challenges, this project represents a positive step towards reducing economic gaps and achieving sustainable development, which enhances the role of the Arab world as a major actor in the global energy sector.
The launch of the Arab Common Electricity Market marks the beginning of a new era of economic integration and regional cooperation in the Arab world, responding to the aspirations of the peoples towards a more stable and prosperous future.
