The scientist discusses biodiversity in Colombia

Despite the global movement towards combating multiple climate changes, we are witnessing an unprecedented climate crisis. Because natural habitats are becoming more damaged, as millions of species of organisms continue their path towards extinction. Which threatens the lives and livelihoods of billions of people who depend on it.

This is the reality that prompted the countries of the world in 2022 to take into account the problems that threatenBiodiversity, as global parties gathered at the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, which is referred to as the Kunming-Montreal Framework.

Kunming Frame

Based on the “COP15” conference, the activities of the sixteenth meetingof the Conference of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity will be held from today – October 21 – until November 1, in the Colombian city of Cali, the third largest country in terms of biological diversity, where representatives of 196 countries will meet; In order to follow up on the status of implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Also at this conference, international parties will discuss the monitoring, reporting and evaluation system of the Kunming-Montreal framework; In order to achieve the objectives of the framework.

COP16 will be the first COP on biodiversity since the adoption of this framework, and the Conference is expected to finalize the mechanism for equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of digital sequence information on genetic resources. Nature financing will have a strong presence in this global conference, as confirmed by the conference’s president, Susana Mohamed, as Latin America will send messages to the whole world about the importance of climate action and the importance of protecting life on land and at sea.

Investing in nature

Colombian Environment Minister Susana Mohamed confirmed that COP16 will witness discussions on strengthening global financial alignment with biodiversity and climate goals, promoting nature-positive investments, bioeconomy growth and innovative financial instruments. It is expected that Oceans Day will be held on the sidelines of the conference, which is an important event in the official program, and will include sessions on planning, conservation and sustainable use of the oceans at all global, regional and national levels.

Peace with nature

COP16 on the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity will be held under the slogan “Peace with Nature,” with a global vision inspired by the Inerida flower, which represents a message of peace with nature. This is a reference to the unique issues that biodiversity brings about through a flower that never dies. The world must be aware that fossil fuel economies generate practices that violate human rights. So the world must make peace with nature.

It is worth noting that achieving the financial goals with which we can address biodiversity problems is necessary to reach any of the other goals, and although the world has made amazing strides in developing innovative solutions for funding nature, we are still struggling to get money to the countries that need it most; World leaders at COP16 on Biodiversity will therefore have an opportunity to facilitate access to financial resources for developing countries and indigenous peoples and local communities; This ensures a truly global investment in nature, where everyone can achieve environmental conservation goals, especially with regard to biodiversity.

In conclusion, the Sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP) on Biodiversity represents a critical opportunity to unite international efforts in confronting biodiversity challenges, and the success of these efforts requires collective commitment. In order to secure a better future for current and future generations, so that man becomes in harmony and sustainability with nature.
