In this context, theAmerican Journal of Public Health devoted a special issue that included 17 scientific studies and articles that dealt with ultra-processed foods from different angles, including their health, social and environmental impacts. The issue also included the results of a survey that included 2,000 adults in the United States, which showed broad support for regulatory measures aimed at enhancing food safety and improving dietary patterns.

In this context, many researchers rely on the “NOVA” classification system, which divides foods according to the degree of industrial processing, and is one of the most widely used systems in studies related to ultra-processed foods, as it helps in analyzing the relationship between dietary patterns and public health and understanding the potential effects of manufactured food products in the long term.

Why do ultra-processed foods worry experts?

Growing concerns about ultra-processed foods are based on a range of studies examining their relationship to a number of chronic health problems. According to the poll included in the special issue of the magazine, most participants from various political orientations agreed that there is a link between these products and high rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, and that the spread of these diseases hinders the achievement of the third goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is concerned with achieving good health and well-being.

The special issue also included a study that indicated the possibility of a relationship between high consumption of ultra-processed foods and increased risk of dementia in the elderly, with researchers stressing the presence of some methodological limitations that require further studies to confirm the nature of this relationship.
