World leaders meet to confront the climate crisis in Baku
In 2022, Egypt was scheduled to host the twenty-seventh Conference of the Parties (COP) in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh, where COP27 was an important platform through which the world discussed the climate challenges that are intensifying day after day, and there Egypt was able to direct the international community towards more effective measures in combating climate change, and this was represented by the establishment of the “Loss and Damage Fund”; In order to support countries affected by severe climate deterioration.
Then came COP28 last year, during which the UAE strengthened COP27 efforts by assessing progress made in the field of climate financing and supporting renewable energy projects. Therefore, the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth Conferences of the Parties were an embodiment of international cooperation in confronting the effects of climate change. With a desire to achieve more Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to stand against everything that could destroy the environment and deplete its resources.
Based on those efforts made – whether those of Egypt or the UAE – the activities of the twenty-ninth climate conference began today in the Azerbaijani capital – Baku, which is expected to continue until November 22 of this month, under the slogan “Solidarity for a Green World.” To accelerate global efforts so that we can address the worsening climate crisis.

This session ofCOP29 brings together government leaders, climate pioneers and civil society officials from nearly 200 countries. Among the prominent figures attending this global conference are: Patricia Scotland, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Jakov Milatovic, President of Montenegro, and Alexander Stubb, President of the Republic of… Finland.
The opening session began by addressing the issue of climate finance, as estimates indicate that countries need trillions of dollars to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help prevent global temperatures from exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius, which is the most important goal of the Paris Climate Agreement.
In this opening session, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber – Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology in the UAE, and Chairman of the COP28 Climate Summit – stressed the importance of continuing to advance global efforts regarding the effects of climate change in all countries, especially developing countries. That is why Al-Jaber called for developing legal texts, improving people’s lives, and protecting the future of future generations.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber’s speech came before he handed over the presidency of the conference to Mukhtar Babayev, the Azerbaijani Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, who has extensive oil experience, as he seeks to direct the climate negotiations in this twenty-ninth edition of the climate conference towards historic climate success, and to achieve consensus among the participating countries for the sake of the global climate goal.
Climate Conference Agenda
COP29 is based on a number of main goals and axes. In addition to the world’s desire to work to combat climate change in general, the conference’s agenda will focus on discussing financing the “Loss and Damage Fund.” To help countries most affected by climate change. The conference also seeks to set ambitious goals for reducing emissions by 2030.
Therefore, the Azerbaijani Presidency of COP29 reaffirms its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030, while increasing this target to 40% by 2050; This reflects its interest in activating the provisions of the Paris Agreement that was adopted in 2015.
