Egypt Nominates Dr. Ashraf Sobhy to Chair CIGEPS in Recognition of His Sustainability Achievements

Egypt is always keen to nominate its virtuous sons for important international positions, given the great trust enjoyed by Egyptian figures, which they deservedly gained for their dedication to work and their appreciation of the extent of the responsibility placed on their shoulders.
Perhaps among the most prominent of these positions is the victory of Dr. Khaled Al-Anani, the former Minister of Tourism, to the position of Director-General of UNESCO, and the victory of the Egyptian diplomat, Dr. Mina Rizk, to the position of President of the Executive Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Egypt’s pioneering role at the international level
In continuation of Egypt’s pioneering role in societyInternationally, Egypt announced the nomination of Dr. Ashraf Sobhi to head the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport affiliated with UNESCO, symbolized by the abbreviation (CIGEPS).
This was during the activities of the Santiago International Conference for Inclusive Sports and Physical Education held in the Chilean capital, Santiago, and organized by the Ministry of Sports in Chile in cooperation with UNESCO, with the participation of ministers, officials and experts from various countries of the world.
The Egyptian state is committed to supporting the inclusive sports system
The participation of Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports, in the conference sessions came through a recorded message, in which he expressed Egypt’s great gratitude for the efforts of Chile and UNESCO in organizing this important international event, stressing Egypt’s commitmentAl-Kabeer supports the inclusive sports system and promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities in sports and education in line with international calls for action and the Santiago Road Map.
Egypt gives great support to the Santiago Roadmap for Inclusive Sports, and is keen to strengthen international partnerships to implement inclusive sports initiatives.
Over the past years, Egypt has achieved a set of ambitious national programs to ensure equal opportunities to practice sports for people with disabilities, and to develop the community sports system to achieve the social dimension of comprehensive sustainable development related to achieving justice and equality.
Series of high-level bilateral meetings with UNESCO

Dr. Ashraf Sobhi was keen to thank the great effort and continuous coordination with the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support this candidacy, stressing that Egypt’s candidacy for the presidency of the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sports reflects international confidence in the Egyptian role under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
This comes in light of the political leadership’s directives to enhance Egypt’s presence in international organizations, noting that this step is an important milestone towards consolidating Egypt’s position in leading international action concerned with sports and development.
The Egyptian vision for chairing the committee
Egypt ownsA vision based on several principles that include enhancing international financing for sports and development projects, as well as supporting developing countries to build sports capabilities and infrastructure, supporting and developing sports policies in accordance with international standards, and activating coordination mechanisms among member states to achieve tangible results globally.
The Minister stressed that this step comes as a continuation of the path of the Egyptian state and political leadership in supporting sport as a tool for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and enhancing cooperation with the United Nations and its international partners during the next stage.

CIGEPS Committee Efforts to Promote Inclusive Sports
The Committee had a major role in reviewing and presenting the “International Charter for Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport” adopted by UNESCO in 2015. This Charter affirms universal principles such as non-discrimination and inclusionIt also specifically highlights the inclusion of persons with disabilities in line with Goal 10 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which stipulates reducing inequalities.
The Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport aims to ensure that inclusive sport environments provide a space for different groups to build confidence and break down social and cultural barriers. The Committee works in cooperation with partners such as the United Nations and non-governmental organizations to support specific initiatives, such as the partnership that aims to include children with disabilities in sport.
