World Day for Health and Safety at Work Towards a Sustainable Work Environment

Climate change is one of the most prominent challenges facing humanity today, especially after its effects have exceeded the limits of the environment and its natural resources to affect health and safety in the workplace, as the work sector is classified among the most affected sectors. Occupational risks associated with climate change are increasing.

As these threats escalate, talking about occupational health and safety has become an essential part of the global debate on climate change. In this context,Earth Guardsin this article reviews the effects of climate change in different work environments, and discusses how to combat these harmful effects.

This coincides with the World Day for Health and Safety at Work, which falls on April 28 of each year, and which was adopted by theInternational Labor Organization (ILO) in 2003; To highlight the importance of protecting workers and ensuring a risk-free working environment, enhancing awareness of the importance of occupational health and safety, and calling on all concerned parties to cooperate in order to achieve a safer and more sustainable working environment.

Health and safety at work

The World Day for Health and Safety at Work is a window through which we look at the challenges of today and the opportunities for change. Talk about health and safety in the work environment is no longer limited to traditional measures, but rather intersects with major issues that shape the features of our present and future, such as climate change and environmental and social justice.

In this context, the International Labor Organization’s report in 2024 – entitled: Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate – indicated that climate change causes new types of occupational risks, including heat stress resulting from extreme heat waves, to which workers in the open air, such as agricultural and construction workers, are exposed.

These effects increase with the increase in cases of respiratory diseases, as a result of air pollution in the workplace, whether at production sites or inside offices, in addition to high rates of skin cancer due to continuous exposure to ultraviolet rays.

This reflects a close connection between worker health and his work environment, and highlights the importance of World Occupational Health and Safety Day as an essential part of the global development agenda. With the acceleration of the effects of climate change, it has become impossible to separate the concept of decent work from the human right to a safe work environment, as a worker who suffers from health problems due to an unsafe work environment will not be able to contribute effectively to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The role of artificial intelligence

To celebrate this anniversary every year, the International Labor Organization organizes distinguished events that bring together its strategic partners from governments, employers and workers, along with a number of prominent international experts. These events are an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences about current challenges and future opportunities in the labor sector.

This year – in 2025 – the event will be a vital space to promote dialogue on “the role of artificial intelligence and digitization at work,” while highlighting best practices in this field. The discussion will include artificial intelligence and digital transformation technologies, and how they influence the formation of occupational safety and health systems across various sectors and countries.

Concerning this, the latest ILO report – entitled: “The Health and Security Revolution: The Role of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation at Work” – pointed to the challenges and opportunities that artificial intelligence and digital transformation impose on occupational health and security standards.

The report issued a few days ago also clarified that robots and smart systems contribute to reducing risks and enhancing the well-being of workers, but this requires the development of proactive policies. In order to ensure the safe and fair use of this technology in work environments.

Our role in improving the work environment

With the challenges and opportunities resulting from technological and environmental developments, clear responsibilities emerge that fall on the shoulders of all concerned parties. Governments are called upon to update legislation and policies to include new risks resulting from climate change, and to provide the necessary support to those seeking to improve their working environments.

On the other hand, employers must realize that providing a healthy and safe work environment is not just a moral obligation, but rather a vital investment in the stability of their companies and increasing their productivity. As for workers, awareness of their rights, and the ability to take the initiative to report health violations and risks at work sites, constitute the basis for achieving the required change within the work environment itself.

In conclusion,Earth Guards stresses the importance of enhancing awareness of the impact of climate change in work environments, and the necessity of taking practical steps to update policies and develop occupational health and safety strategies in a way that contributes to achieving the goals of sustainable development.
